A stroll through the Cathedral Square [en/es]

Hello friends of Arquitectura +Diseño!

A few days ago, despite the rains, I ventured down Empedrado Street in Old Havana with my son. After passing in front of the emblematic Bodeguita del Medio, I arrived at the Cathedral Square, one of the four most important squares in Havana.

I had always thought that this was the oldest square, but after some research I found out that this was the last one to be built. In this square all the hydraulic wastes of the area converged, which gave origin to the first aqueduct of the country.

When I arrived there, the square was a bit deserted due to the rainy weather. However, I kept searching that cobblestone square for the memories I had engraved in my memory. It had been a long time since I had been there, but I remember that it was a purely commercial square where handicraft products were offered, always full of artisans and tourists, it was very difficult to walk around it because it was always so full. In that square I bought my first leather sandals, when I was a university student, a memory I will never forget.

Despite being less crowded nowadays and not being the commercial center of yesteryear, it is still very visited by tourists. The doors of its beautiful temple, the church, are always open, although in those days it was under repair. Tourists continue to visit it because walking through it produces an extraordinary magic. Around it are preserved all the buildings, which were the homes of the colonial aristocracy. In addition, in one of its corners is the famous El Patio Restaurant and, less than 50 meters away, as I have already mentioned, the restaurant La bodeguita del Medio, which has international fame and renown.

The square is located on the corner where Empedrado and San Ignacio streets converge, and is bordered by the corridors of the buildings that surround it. It is currently visited by musicians and troubadours who attract the attention of both national and foreign tourists.

The church is centrally located and provides an impressive view of the square. It is a beauty with its set of columns on the facade. It has two lateral towers with bell towers. Its facade has not been modified, which is wonderful because the ornaments that make figures resembling waves were preserved, making it a very unique design.

The houses that surround this square retain the same style as when they were built, it was not necessary to restore them in their entirety. On the walls there are lanterns of the time. Almost all the buildings are museums. In front of the church, on the right, are the old houses of the Marquis of Arcos and, on the left, those of Marquez Aguas Claras.

In one of the corridors of the Marqués de Arcos house is a life-size statue of the famous Spanish dancer Antonio Gades, leaning against one of the columns. Gades was the first director of the Spanish Ballet and died in 2004, almost at the age of 70.

In the background, in front of the church, is the house of Count Casa Bayona, which is now the Colonial Art Museum. It is the only one without a corridor, so the facade is lighter than the rest. You can appreciate the blue wooden doors on the second floor and on the second floor the traditional windows from the ceiling to the floor.

This square, through which many people have walked, is one of those that mark the identity of this city. It reached its greatest relevance after the construction of the church, but in my opinion, both complement each other, the church shines for being in the square and the square shines for having that church.

see you soon friends!! 😊

What a lovely square @lileisabel! Cuba is definitely blessed with exquisite architecture. I could spend hours just staring at those incredible details. The cathedral is certainly a masterpiece. Fascinating! ☺️

That's right friend @storiesoferne, it is a beautiful square, of all it is the one that preserves the original appearance the best, I adore all this colonial architecture that we have so close at hand. 👌🏽❤️

Sister @lileisabel, I love the architecture of this great plaza, I love colonial Havana.
What is new to me is the statue of the Spanish dancer.
Excellent pictures you have taken. Happy start of the week 🌹🌷🥀🪻💐🌻🌼💮🌸🪷🌸🪷☘️

If the statue of that dancer is something newer, the rest is intact 👌🏽👍🏽❤️

I was so close to this place and I had no idea it existed, but well I missed many places in Havana that I should make another trip. Regards !

In spite of the bad weather, you managed to take very nice pictures of the architecture of that area of Old Havana, which we always agree that it is one of the most beautiful in the city. Particularly, one of the places that attracts me the most is the façade of the Colonial Art Museum, the fact of not having a portal, like the rest, makes it different

That's right, you're right, this is how the entire façade looks clearly, I admit that I am a friend of columns and arches but on this occasion the Museum of Colonial Art filled my eyes.

What a beautiful publication, I can't wait to go to that square, even though I have been to Havana so many times, I haven't visited the place recently.
I would really like your photos.

Hello my dear @lileisabel I loved walking with you through this square because it brought back memories of my youth when I used to go to the craft fair, what a time those were! Very nice sculpture to Gades. Nice post friend with spectacular photos🤩🤗.

Hello friend what a beautiful square, the houses have a marked incidence of colonial style and its characteristic balconies roofs and windows, despite the rain you achieved nice pictures. 🤗🌷🌺

Happy Wednesday!

Thank you for always being there friend, if that area has a very marked colonial aspect in its buildings, it is very beautiful.❤️👍🏽👌🏽

Charming, spectacular, the truth is that this colonial square is very beautiful. Havana is full of history, I'm sure many are still untold. They are excellent photos, greetings @lileisabel

This is Havana, it has a lot to tell, that's why I like to photograph it and look for stories told or not. Thanks for stopping by ❤️🙂

Undoubtedly.

That buildings there looks antique and unique. In my country, it would be an old city :D Thanks for sharing..

It is, Habana Vieja is the old part of the city of Havana and houses many ancient architectural treasures that we preserve with care.

An exquisite public square indeed @lileisabel. This spectacular landmark truly has an incredible architectural quality due to the abundance of eye-catching details - providing an immersive experience for visitors. ☺️

That's right @archmoments, in this part of Havana this type of construction abounds, but in this square that concentrates on all sides all these architectural relics that we preserve and care for with care. A great treasure 😍👍🏽🙏🏽
