Greetings my dear friends of the Architecture+Desing community, as always it is a pleasure to be among you admiring your content and along with it admiring every corner of the world; and that is the beauty of our community, here we can interact, meet, discuss and discover about this topic that we are so passionate about as it is the architecture of our cities, their houses, towns, large buildings, small spaces, history, culture, their spaces, their way of living.
Un saludo mis queridos haber y amigos de la comunidad Architecture+Desing, como siempre es un gusto estar entre ustedes admirando su contenido y junto con él admirando cada rincón del mundo; y es que eso es lo bonito de nuestra comunidad, aquí podemos interactuar, conocernos, discutir y descubrir sobre ese tema que nos apasiona tanto como lo es la arquitectura de nuestras ciudades, sus casas, poblados, grandes edificios, pequeños espacios, la historia, la cultura , sus espacios, su manera de vivir.
Venezuela has always been attentive to every detail, our infrastructure has been changing over time, here we have a bit of French, Spanish and Caribbean culture. For example Caracas has been undergoing transformations for some years now, the area of San Bernardino which used to be an urbanism completely of big houses, with wide gardens and red roofs, now its owners have left and sold, now in those lands big buildings are being built, most of them of red bricks and so little by little a new habitat has been formed where more people can live comfortably.
Venezuela siempre ha estado atenta a cada detalle, nuestra infraestructura ha ido modificándose con el tiempo, aquí tenemos un poco de la cultura francesa, española y caribeña. Por ejemplo Caracas a estado desde hace unos años sufriendo transformaciones, la zona de san Bernardino que antes era un urbanismo completamente de grandes casas, con amplios jardines y techos rojos ahora sus dueños se han ido y han vendido, ahora en esos terrenos se construyen grandes edificios, la mayoría de ladrillos rojos y así poco a poco se ha ido formando un nuevo hábitat donde más gente pueda vivir cómodamente.
In the capital there are still old houses, some have been taken over by the government to save and preserve the historical heritage that we cannot forget.
Today I come to show you "la casona", the old presidential house in Caracas, Venezuela.
En la capital aún se conservan casas antiguas, algunas han sido tomadas por el gobierno para salvar y conservar el patrimonio histórico que no podemos olvidar.
Hoy les vengo a mostrar “la casona” antigua casa presidencial, en Caracas- Venezuela.
This Sunday we went as a family to spend some time together, have a photo session in the gardens of La Casona and also get to know the place that was previously forbidden for security reasons.
Este domingo nos fuimos en familia para compartir un rato, hacernos una sesión de fotos en los jardines de La Casona y además de eso conocer el lugar que antes estaba prohibido por motivos de seguridad.
This visit brought back a lot of memories of my childhood when my mother used to bring my brothers and me to the capital. My family has almost all lived towards the east of Caracas, so it was very common to pass by a street from which you could see from afar the entrance to the house, the security checkpoints, the national flag waving in the front yard, the entire facade dressed in white with large palm trees and beautiful gardens.
Hacer esta visita me ha traído muchísimos recuerdos de mi infancia cuando mi mama nos traía a mis hermanos y a mí a la capital. Mi familia casi toda ha vivido hacia el este de caracas, así que era muy común pasar por una calle de la cual se podía ver de lejos la entrada a la casa, las garitas de seguridad, la bandera nacional ondeando en su patio frontal, toda su fachada vestida de blanco con grandes palmeras y hermosos jardines.
Passing by was an obligatory stop, so that the little ones could see where our president lived. Of course it was very exciting and remembering it made me feel happy.
Then we grew up and we were the ones who repeated that exact moment with the new generations as they did with us.
Pasar por allí era una parada obligatoria, para que los más pequeños pudiésemos ver donde vivía nuestro presidente. Por supuesto era muy emocionante y recordarlo me hizo sentir feliz.
Luego crecimos y éramos nosotros los que repetíamos aquel momento exacto con las nuevas generaciones así como lo hicieron con nosotros.
The mansion is no longer a presidential house since 2019 and became the Aquiles Nazoa Cultural Center; this center was designated by presidential order to promote culture and dedicate its spaces for the meeting of the communities.
The truth is that for a long time I wanted to come and visit it, but there is always an unforeseen event that made us delay the visit.
We arrived at 10:30 in the morning, luckily it was open and I say luckily because these places tend to close when the weather is rainy. It is something like that for security measures because it is dangerous to be in the gardens and some branches may fall off.
La casona ya dejo de ser casa presidencial desde el año 2019 y pasó a ser el centro Cultural Aquiles Nazoa; este centro fue designado por orden presidencial para promover la cultura y dedicar sus espacios para el encuentro de las comunidades.
La verdad es que desde hace tiempo quería venir a visitarlo, pero siempre hay un imprevisto que nos hacía retrasar la visita.
Llegamos a las 10:30 de la mañana, por suerte si estaba abierto y digo por suerte porque estos espacios tienden a cerrar cuando el clima esta lluvioso. Es algo así como por medidas de seguridad ya que es peligroso estar por los jardines y alguna rama se pueda desprender.
As soon as we arrived we were surprised, the truth is very beautiful, very elegant, worthy of a person as important as a president of the republic.
As I walked through its gardens, as I saw the large palm trees, the corridors, its people, I could only remember each of those presidents, their families who passed through here, especially my countrymen Carlos Andrés Pérez and Ramón J. Velásquez Mujica. On the other hand, it is impossible to forget or not to remember the historical events that marked our country, such as "El Caracazo", an event that occurred at the end of the 80's and later two coups d'état in 1992, the first one on February 4th and the second one on November 27th.
Apenas llegamos nos quedamos sorprendidos, la verdad es muy hermosa, muy elegante, digna de una persona tan importante como lo es un presidente de la república.
Mientras caminaba por sus jardines, mientras veía las grandes palmeras, los pasillos, su gente, solo podía recordar a cada uno de esos presidentes, sus familias que pasaron por acá, sobre todo a mis paisanos Carlos Andrés Pérez y Ramón J. Velásquez Mujica. Por otra parte es imposible olvidar o no recordar los hechos históricos que marcaron nuestro país, como “El Caracazo” evento ocurrido a finales de los 80 y mas tarde dos golpes de estado el mismo año 1992, el primero el 4 de febrero y el segundo fue el 27 de noviembre.
The house:
The house offers two tours on weekends, there are protocol guys there who very kindly guide you at 11am and 2pm. We waited for the afternoon tour since my son and his girlfriend had not arrived.
Everything was very punctual, at 2 p.m. the tour started, three very nice guys gave us some rules before entering. First, no flash photography, no touching the walls or the furniture.
According to what the guys told us, this house was not always a presidential house, it used to be a sugar cane farm and belonged to a German businessman who left it to his wife when he died, who sold it to the government.
La casa:
La casa ofrece dos recorridos los fines de semana, allí hay unos chicos de protocolo que muy amablemente te guían a la 11 de la mañana y a las 2 de la tarde. Nosotros nos esperamos al recorrido de la tarde ya que mi hijo y su novia no habían llegado.
Todo fue muy puntual, a las 2 p.m. comenzó el recorrido, tres chicos muy amables nos dieron algunas normas antes de entrar. Primero no se permiten fotos con flash, no se pueden tocar las paredes o los mobiliarios.
Según nos contaron los chicos, esta casa no siempre fue casa presidencial, antes era una finca de caña de azúcar y pertenecía a un empresario alemán que al morir se la deja a su esposa quien se la vende al gobierno.
It was in the 60's that the government of the time gave the order to get a presidential house in Caracas and after so much searching they got this place.
This house was smaller, so they began the construction or expansion of the same. It was modified to have all the comforts worthy of the presidential family and it took two years. Some things were changed to give a modern touch, for example the columns of the old part were round and now they made them square. The doors used to have two wings and now they are one wing but taller. There were also modifications in the roof, railings. And type of wood.
Fue por los años 60 que el gobierno de turno da la orden de conseguir una casa presidencial en caracas y después de tanto buscar consiguen este lugar.
Esta casa era más pequeña, por lo que comienzan la construcción o ampliación de la misma. Fue modificada para tener todas las comodidades dignas de la familia presidencial y en eso se tardaron dos años. Algunas cosas cambiaron para dar un toque moderno como por ejemplo las columnas de la parte antigua eran redondas y ahora las hicieron cuadradas. Las puertas antes eran de dos alas y ahora son de una sola pero más altas. También hubo modificaciones en los techo, rejas. Y tipo de madera.
The most recent changes were made by President Hugo Chavez, who according to the guides told us, he hardly lived there, he only went there from time to time and would let his family know in advance so that they could wait for him.
Los cambios más recientes lo llevó a cabo el presidente Hugo Chávez quien según nos contaron los guías, él casi no vivía allí, solo iba de vez en cuando y avisaba con tiempo para que su familia lo esperara.
The most relevant changes were directed to his main room, where they installed bulletproof curtains, opened a door to the courtyard so that his vehicle could be parked right there. Besides that, he had an office with a library and the ministers' office nearby. The truth I think I didn't want to walk too much or I didn't have time to do it, so I wanted the most important things or the most basic thing close by.
Los cambios más relevantes fueron dirigidos a su habitación principal, allí instalaron cortinas antibala, abrieron una puerta hacia el patio para que su vehículo estacionara justo en ese lugar. Además de eso tenía cerca una oficina con biblioteca y el despacho de ministros. La verdad creo que no quería caminar mucho o no tenía tiempo para hacerlo, así que quería las cosas más importantes o la más básica cerca.
Guidance:
First we are placed in the main hallway, from here I am left with the floor in the shape of a chessboard, very imposing. At the end of this corridor there is a chapel, according to what they say it was customary that in the houses of wealthy families there was a chapel to attend mass, do baptisms, pray and more. There is a very old bell that was brought from the east of the country and before it was used to call everyone to mass but now it is used to attract visitors to the tour.
Also on the side of the church is the symbol of the pope who authorized the construction of the chapel and in this case it was Pope John Paul II.
Guiatura:
Primero nos ubican en el pasillo principal, de aquí me quedo con el piso en forma de ajedrez, muy imponente. Al final de ese pasillo hay una capilla, según dicen era costumbre que en las casas de familias pudientes hubiese una capilla para presenciar la misa, hacer bautizos, rezar y más. Allí hay una campana muy antigua que fue traída del oriente del país y antes era utilizada para llamar todos a misa pero ahora se utiliza para atraer a los visitantes al recorrido.
También al costado de la iglesia está el símbolo del papa el cual autorizó la construcción de la capilla y en este caso fue el Papa Juan Pablo Segundo.
We went inside the house and we got to the first courtyard, there was a well, this is another important fact of colonial times because the water wells were only allowed to wealthy families for their maintenance, the other peasants and employees had to go to the river in search of water for consumption, cleaning, among others.
Pasamos adentro de la casa y nos conseguimos con el primer patio, allí había un pozo, este es otro dato importante de la época colonial ya que los pozos de agua solo eran permitidos a las familias pudientes para su manutención, los demás campesinos y empleados debían ir al rio en busca de agua para su consumo, aseo, entre otros.

A medida que vas avanzando se va abriendo la historia, de cómo cada presidente vivía, como eran sus esposas, quienes trabajaron en ella, las pinturas, sus muebles.Yo por ahora quiero finalizar por este día pero pronto les estaré trayendo al segunda parte y un poco más.
