Hey remmber that ring I dessigned and 3d printed and brought up in 2 blog posts,
link to the most recent
Well we at it again but this time around we stepping it up with a part copper fillaments, it's havier then the plastic and also alows for polish and patina.
I am obviously bias but I think it looks pretty nice with the color, sort of hard to capture on camera but it's clealy fairly reflective.
Where we at right now is a beautiful finish and almost feels soft! But check out the raw part before the meticulous sanding
Looks a lot worse than it is those parts on the inside are called hairs my filaments is fairly old and maybe my settings not the best for the material this can happen with plastics and its usuasly not hard to get rid off, aside from them the print came out very well, but Still lots of post processing to really bring out the copper finish
It's really copper so after exposure to water It got that bluish patina in the non sanded parts.
This was not an easy process it also has the screw system to lock the coin in place. I made 4 rings in total out of this part copper filament.
The first was not desinged great with the copper filament in mind and after sanding the part that was holding the coin from the front got too thin and it separted from the rest of the ring when I pushed the coin from the back with my screw system.
The second is on the left of the picture above this paragraph I made the top lip that hold the coin thicker and sanded down up to 3k grit sand paper and polished with brasso.
The third ring I fummbled, I accidently printed it part hollow and didn't realize until I was sanding it for a while and the thin band bit snapped in my hands.
The 4th is sanded with up to 7k grit sandpaper and also for double the time I also reduced the front lip slighly as I over compensated last time.
@trumpman would say I wasted hours with this, and thats one way to look at it I suppose but I think I gained valauble knowledge and experience that can help me in achieving some of my dreams.
So is that it for the ring? Probably not I will look into metal filaments with higher metal content there are some that I can print and then they can be turned into fully metal parts however that requres and extra step with some extra expensives equipment.
Casting is also something I am looking forward to and hoping to get around to soon, unfortunately there is no options for silver with FDM 3d prining as far as I can tell, I will be looking to change that situation so I will be getting to the experimentation.
