It was noon on a sunny hot Saturday and Victoria was in the shower chasing away the excess sweat that had soaked her body when she heard a loud knock on her door which reached her bathroom faintly. She couldn't ask from the bathroom who was knocking on her door, so the person persisted in knocking and that informed her that it wasn't her fiance, Eugene. She hurriedly cleaned up, put on a yellow round-neck shirt and a short that was fitted just below her knees and rushed to the door, "who's there, hold on I'm coming"
She opened the door only to meet a chubby-skinned lady with all shades of smiles on her face.
"Ene!" She screamed, hugged her and felt like she wanted to carry her but Ene was too big for her to carry.
"Why didn't you call me on the phone that you were coming, I could have left it open or at least waited for you before going to take my shower" Victoria led her inside and gave her a sorry-filled face.
"I like it when people don't know I'm coming. My very own way of catching things"
"You're still with that attitude" Victoria threw the pillow on the chair at her and they burst into laughter.
Victoria and Ene have been best of friends since high school, after university life, they both found themselves in the same city but the distance to each other was far that's why anytime they see each other, it is always like a reunion party because they don't see often even though they talk regularly on phone and gisting each other what has been happening in their lives.
As Victoria went inside the kitchen to make food for her dear friend, Ene got up from the one seated couch she sitting on and began to move around with her eyes scanning every bit of the well-furnished small sitting room, there was a sound system very close to the 32 inches TV fixed to the wall, the lights in the house were florescent with blue rays and at a corner has a small wooden table with an iron-foamed chair beside it and there were some books on it which portrayed that it was Victoria's reading table.
She got closer to the table, among the four books there, her eye caught one with the red cover and spiral binding at the edge which showed a typical copy of a jotter.
She picked it up, a pen was in the middle and when she opened the part where the pen was, she saw that it was a diary and not just an ordinary jotter. Because Victoria is her friend, she sat down on the chair to read things about he friend, she began to flip back from the place where the pen was. She flipped to a page with '7th of August' date and she screamed.
"Victoria!"
The scream was so loud that Victoria had to run from the kitchen with utmost curiosity. "What's that? Are you okay?" Victoria was panting already as if she just finished a 10 km race.
"What happened on 7th of August?" Ene asked waving the Diary for her to see.
Upon seeing that, Victoria flared up and rushed to her to get the dictionary but Ene was fast enough to dodge her intended action.
"Give it to me. Didn't you see it's a diary or you don't know the difference between a diary and a book anybody can read?" She was on top of her voice with anger written all over her face.
"Yes, I know it's a diary and must you write everything here. What if your Boyfriend were the one who saw it? What if your boyfriend saw that you cheated on him on the 7th of August, Do you think you'll still be shouting by now?" Ene shouted back at her, scolding her as if she were her mother.
"Ene, just calm down, hand over the dairy to me. It's a diary, it's a personal thing and I keep it off from anybody. You only got to meet it there because I didn't know you were coming. Please hand it over" Victoria didn't finish her statement when Ene, out of disappointment threw the dairy at her. She caught it and sighed in relief while she rushed off to the room to keep it and immediately she left the sitting room, Eugene, her boyfriend opened the door slowly and walked into the sitting with his face red in rage and his eyes very fierce.
"Goo...goo...good...good afternoon sir" You must be Eugene, right?" Ene stammered upon seeing how Eugene with his giant size walked into the house without noise and with a very tightened face.
"Where's Victoria?" Eugene enquired after looking at Ene for some seconds and snubbing her greeting.
"She went inside...."
Ene was responding when Victoria walked into the parlour with a plate of noodles in her left hand while her right hand was holding a glass of water.
"Babe you're here, good afternoon" she greeted but noticed how hard Eugene's face was. She dropped the plate and glass of water on the table,
walked closer to him, "Babe, is anything wrong?"
Eugene cleared his throat, "I heard everything and my heart developed sore. I thought we were building a home. I have been dedicating my life to this relationship but you're there cheating around and having the gut to document it in your rubbish diary. You know what, don't come looking for me."
Eugene said all these in a very calm tone but the vibration that came with it showed deep anger. He walked away and Victoria on the spot couldn't move her feet to go after him, it was as if the gods of the earth were holding her pinned to the ground.
Still, on the magnetic spot, tears rolled out of her eyes and, she slumped off ans before she could reach the ground, Ene rushed her, carried the glass of water on the table and began to sprinkle it on her face until she regained consciousness.
She had messed up already, she found it so hard and shameful to go after Eugene to beg for forgiveness. The only step she took was trying to reach out to Eugene on the phone but she was blocked by Eugene already.
