If there's one subject that gets me talking endlessly, it's Police Journalism. I consider it one of the most challenging and, for me, the most captivating branches of journalism. You need to have a solid understanding of legal systems, know how to investigate sharply, and, of course, have a deep, deep passion for the pursuit of truth.
I've been working in this field for eight years. I can say that, for me, police journalism is a calling. Many people shy away from this area. I chose it to live and work in every day.
The work of a police journalist begins with gathering facts, which are often complex and sensitive depending on the case. You need to have the skills. Working with crimes, investigations, and public safety isn't for everyone. Every day brings a new story, a new challenge. Each report has an impact.
You need a strong stomach to view certain images. You need a heart of stone not to be swayed by emotion in some cases. Investigation is our core. Gathering information, data, interviews. Building good sources, maintaining strong relationships. Police officers, lawyers, victims and even criminals. You have to know how to listen. To all sides. Trust is essential. A police journalist has to be ethical and meticulous.
We have to be responsible, sensitive and respectful. Dealing with victims and their families requires empathy and consideration. You have to be good under pressure.
Police journalism is the pinnacle of hard news. Deadlines are tight. We have to be fast, accurate and concise.
I am passionate about police journalism. It's no surprise that I knew where I wanted to go as early as university. I continued in graduate school. The challenges are immense, but the satisfaction of a job well done is incomparable.
