A World Without Electricity || Weekend Engagement Prompt

in Weekend Experiences17 days ago (edited)

In the part of the world where I hail from and live currently, electricity is a curse. We live in utter darkness and life has not been beautiful. This comes to show that electricity is important.

Before our great grandparents were introduced to electricity, they lived their lives depending on locally made lanterns that burn on oil and palm fruit fibre. During these days, there was no need to spend too much resources building a dam or hydra from where the communities would be lit up.

Though, I have tasted electricity and seen the several good it has brought but for me, it would have been better to live a peaceful life without electricity. It is that bad. Poor citizens are made to pay through their noses for the electricity they did not consume.

There is high rate corruption with the power sector in Africa as a whole. For instance, in Nigeria, the power ministry was sold out in the name of privatization. That has been for over ten years now. The companies that bought over the ministry were owned by politicians who do not know anything about the welfare of the citizens. Their major concern is profit making. So far, all generated power has been directed to industrialized areas where heavy bills are charged and more profits recorded. Then, the ordinary citizens who are majorly peasants have soon forgotten the importance of the need for electricity.

Now, we have returned to the ancient ways of life. Our meals are cooked with wood. In fact, some people have resolved that a modern day kitchen with all the paraphernalia of a light and electric cooker is a waste of resources. Though, they mentioned the dangers posed by the release of gas into the atmosphere which has resulted in the leakage of the ozone layer.

This is not to say that we have not tasted the good side of electricity. We all know that a work without electricity will be dangerously different from the one we currently live in. Modern conveniences and technologies that we rely on today will not be invented and thus create a wide gap between our living style as currently experienced.

INDUSTRIALIZATION AND PROCESSES

In the spirit of invention, the industrial revolution of Europe in the 19th century is a wake up call for all other continents to come alive and see the need for modernization. Electricity is very pivotal to an industrialized world. Heavy duty machines need to run through the power of electricity. A centralized electric system is what most industries need to survive and to produce goods that can reach the final consumer at an affordable price.

Medical facilities also may struggle to handle most cases where there is lack of electricity. Most live saving devices function with electricity. This goes to show the extent of the importance of electricity to mankind. Without electricity, the human race will run adrift into the sea of time.

SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE BUSINESSES

In a world where the level of unemployment has skyrocketed, individuals have resorted to small and medium scale businesses to earn a living. Businesses like bathing saloon, hairdressing saloon, phone repairs, fashion design, carpenter, point of sale ventures and many more are succeeding due to the prevalence of power supply in major cities. I can also say it clearly that one of the reasons for rural-urban drift is the availability of electricity in the latter.
Our world needs to be electrified even to the most remote village.
There should be a constant adequate power supply unlike in most parts of Africa where electricity has never been constant for up to 36 hours on a consecutive basis.

Without electricity, no doubt, we would have not been able to fix our homes with gadgets like the television set, or cooling and heating systems, refrigeration and all the appliances that have made life more convenient for you and I.

In modern Western states, it would have been challenging where the electrical transportation system is not in place due to the non-availability of the electrical system.

Overall, though some of us have had it bad when it comes to the benefits of electricity, this discovery is one of the greatest that the human race cannot do without.
