Nelson and smartphones are like parallel lines

in Weekend Experiences4 months ago

Greetings!

Nelson, my neighbor, has this lifestyle where he doesn't know the basics of technology, especially when it comes to phones, which are very common in the era we live in today. I know not everyone is technologically inclined, but hey, the rate at which people are not oriented with technology has drastically reduced compared to the days when phones and basic electronics were not common.

Nelson is a guy in his mid-30s, and even now, he finds it difficult to change his display picture (DP) on social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and X. This is something I have taught him numerous times. It sucks when he comes with a newly snapped photo, saying he wants to use it as his display photo and asks for my help. If my mom were doing that, I wouldn't expect him to come, after a series of tutorials, and beg me to help him change his WhatsApp DP.

This is one thing I would like to change in Nelson's life if I ever have the power to do so. Of course, I've tried breaking down the processes to do basic things on the phone, but he just can't grasp those lessons.

The most surprising thing is that this guy isn't illiterate (I mean, he's able to read, write, and speak). He's sharp in those areas, but when it comes to technology, he scores zero.

Why do I want him to change or wish he would change?

To me, it looks very off for a guy of his age to be totally absent in basic technology, especially with phones. Though he may seem very organized in a way that he doesn't get embarrassed in public, the fact remains that such a moment could come unexpectedly, and embarrassment would follow.

It may look normal to you reading this, as it appears normal to Nelson, but to me, it's not normal at all.

Another reason I want him to change is because, I won't lie, his numerous requests are very disturbing to me. You know that situation where you've taught someone something over 100 times, and he still comes to beg you to do the same thing for him? It's disturbing.

It's not only about setting his social media DP. There are things like showing him how to make a voice note, how to forward a message, and how to copy and paste. Not only this, but until today, he still comes to me anytime he wants to make a money transfer on his phone. I've taught him how to do it countless times, but he still comes with the excuse that if he does it, it won't be fast, and the connection will terminate along the way. Oh yeah, that's because he's using USSD codes.
What about using the bank app for easier transactions? Oh boy, that's the worst. Everything on the bank app of his bank is too professional for him, and he comes around anytime he wants to make a transaction.

I know every single detail of his bank account. He's lucky I'm not a bad person; I could have been taking little pennies from his account, and he wouldn't know. Lol😅

Thank you for reading.

This is my response to one of the prompts in Weekend-engagement

Wow... this is grandma's style. Lol. I think he is not interested in learning, and that's because you are always there to help him. The moment he is in dire need of using his phone for Internet and bank transactions and you are not there. He'll grow up.

You are doing well.

That's it😂😂

Yesterday, he came that I should show him how to turn selfie camera.
The guy is blunt 😂

Thank you for stopping by

Have you tried charging him some token anytime he come. To you with a request for something you have taught previously? I guess that would make him sit up and not barge in on you to disturb you.

Lol😂
Yesterday, he came with a different one, that I should show him how to turn selfie camera.
Blunt💯😂

Maybe I should try charging him😂

🤣🤣🤣🤣, omo this guy worse pass juju. Even some juju now use tech 😁

Try and charge him, that will make him think twice about forgetting what you taught him.

Not everyone are technological inclined and I do not think it's Nelson alone that needs a person each time he wants to do something on his phone, just continue showing him the way, with time he will learn to do it for himself.

I think he zeroed his mind that's why, if not how can a young guy can't navigate technology in this era, that's odd.
But keep trying maybe you can achieve something.

Not everyone has to be tech-savvy. However, the situation you find yourself in with your friend Nelson is starting to weigh you down, as is very evident in this post.

I think Nelson has told himself that he 'can't do this things' and has locked himself into that mindset. This could be due to his low self-esteem or the fact that he always has you on hand to help him.

Next time he asks you for free tech-support - ask him to take a piece of paper and pen and note down step-by-step what needs to be done, as this is 'the last time you will help him with this particular problem'. Also encourage him to use his browser and ask 'uncle google' questions.

I know this may seem like a drastic move, but I know from experience that such friends start to annoy us more and more after some time. It can all end in a big brawl when your ocean of patience finally dries up. Besides - the guy is a grown man, he needs to learn independence.
Great that you are patient and helping him, I hope you manage to keep this relationship healthy.... for both of you:)

These kinds of people frustrate me oo and for me who is quick to getting angry at such act, they understand this and won't have to disturb me again. Imagine teaching you something over and over again when you aren't a kid? I have a lady at my PPA too, owns an android phone and do not know these basic things like copying and pasting, searching Google for answers etc. It's annoying 😑

As long as a person refuses to change there's nothing or less you could about it.

Wow.... I'm already vexed reading this sef, how will someone at that age not know how to use basic technology that even my 5 year old neighbor can do. Anyways you're always there to help him so he will keep coming back.
