Happy Thursday everyone! I'm going to return to my old schedule of posts as of today after my brief hospital stay threw everything off. That means Thursday I'm going back to my Silver Strikers! These are commemorative casino tokens made of silver that can be won by playing the Silver Striker slot machines which are pretty much a thing of the past. I haven't seen one of these slots in years now which is a shame because the tokens they would payout were made of real precious metal.
The last few years the best way to get these has been eBay, or if you happen to be in Las Vegas several pawn shops have stocks of them as well. I typically prefer to collect tokens from casinos that are now defunct since it makes them a little more special. Today I'm sharing one from a casino in Las Vegas that is still in existence, the Golden Nugget. I'll share below why I like this particular casino!
About the token
From silverstirkers.com
As you can see this token was produced in 2002 right after the Sept 11, 2001 terror attacks in the US. That's why you see the patriotic eagle design which was really well done. It's well designed and contains just about 0.65 Troy ounces (20.2 grams) of pure silver surrounded by a brass ring. I love collecting these for the silver content and the history involved in the token. Once you get started collecting these they can be addicting, I'll warn you in advance!
The Golden Nugget opened on August 30, 1946 making it one of the oldest casinos still in operation. A point of interest is that it was opened using mafia money because they didn't want to miss out on gaming profits. It has changed ownership several times been updated multiple times since, and three luxury hotel towers have been built. Frank Sinatra used to headline frequently at this venue and even had his own suite in the hotel. The casino has been featured on TV and films, and is an iconic part of the history of Las Vegas.

Now my favorite thing found in the Golden Nugget Las Vegas is the Hand of Faith gold nugget. It is the largest gold nugget ever found using a metal detector and was discovered near near Kingower, Victoria, Australia on Sept. 26, 1980. It weighs 874.82 Troy ounces (just over 27 kg) of gold! When found it was only 12 inches (30 cm) below the surface, just imagine the guy's face as he slowly undug this behemoth. That's what I call a great day with the metal detector... It was sold to the casino for just about $1 million US dollars.

I personally love metal detecting and it would be amazing to find anything even a tenth or even one hundredth of that size! Definitely the coolest thing at the Golden Nugget in my opinion! When in Las Vegas I recommend stopping by just to see this monster gold nugget! I know that many of the #silvergoldstackers will be meeting in Vegas in a couple weeks, but I'm sure they've all seen this already!
I hope you enjoyed my post today about my Golden Nugget silver token. If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments please feel free to leave them below.
And my disclaimer:
