So called law against child pornography
For days now the news in Europe has been dominated with the proposal of a new European law, called "Chat control" which will scan every message sent through WhatsApp, Messenger, FaceTime, etc... before in enters the end-to-end encryption. Yes, you read it correct, it will scan every message sent. This will happen through an algorithm powered by Artificial Intelligence, and will search for child pornography in the chats. Whether it are pictures or links, it should filter out the child pornography, and prevent child abuse.
At least, that is how the European Commission is selling it to the people. But, luckily a lot of protest and controversy is going around on social media and in the mainstream media, by normal people, but also more influencial persons.
Because, this law would make the European Union an open prison. If it isn't one yet.
False positives
The biggest concern is the "false positives" it will produce. Grandmother sending a picture of her grandchild in the pool to her son or other family members will suddenly be a potential spreader of child pornography.
The second, and probably very realistic concern is, that this law would set the door open to scan our messages for a lot more than just "child pornography". Who says it won't be used to track down occasional drug use, or people cheating on their spouses, for example.
And with if this data gets exposed through data leaks, and not so friendly powers want to abuse this data through blackmail or other despicable actions.
Voting is delayed
Today, due to all the concerns that were outed, the voting got delayed. But it is not erased from the agenda of the European Commission. They still want to go through with it. Which would once again be a sad day for free world.
This is again a step closer to the dystopian society, George Orwell projected us in his 1984 book.
Let us hope that common sense will prevail, and this law doesn't make it through the voting!
Sincerely,
