Hello Hive Community! Today's topic in #mayinleo is careers of the future. These days, we cannot talk about future careers without considering AI. There are fears that humans will lose their jobs with the emerging technologies to AI.
For example, Chat GPT was released in 2022 and in a few days have over 1m subscribers. While it is still young, the development of AI is very fast. Suddenly, professions in writing, law and entertainment among others were suddenly threatened. Indeed, the rise of AI is fast as aside from Chat GPT, we see other AI apps produce art, images and music.
Fear of new technologies is nothing new.
As discussed in the above link, there were several cases throughout history where technological change was feared to replace humans.
1589 - Queen Elizabeth I refused to grant a patent to knitting machines because it might put manual knitters out of work.
1772 - Thomas Mortimer wrote that he wished never to see machines such as saw mills and stamps as they would “exclude the labour of thousands of the human race, who are usefully employed …”
1962 - John F. Kennedy cautioned against automation replacing humans.
If humans lose jobs to new tech, then why with the number of technological advances throughout the years were there no equal increase in unemployment?
I remember when I was in school thinking of a course I will take, there were talks that computers will replace a lot of jobs like finance, engineering ang accounting. However this is not so. On the contrary, not only did computers made tasks more efficient but it also created new professions like computer science and computer programming.
My conclusion is AI and technology is not a threat to our jobs but we can use it to make our tasks more efficient. Even new professions like blogging, streaming, professional gaming and content creation have emerged as a result of new technologies.
I heard someone say that if you choose a job you love then you will never work a day in your life. So let's not fear AI and technology but continue to pursue a career that we love. AI is a tool and not a competition. Let's learn to harness its powers to make our jobs easier.
