Selling the cards one is not using and buying useful ones are just choices you make in games that you love playing. I never really got to play GLS. So you get to upgrade the level of players to give them newer abilities?
The game in the current version is not very fun, but I hope the next version will be much more fun.
Yes the cards have the star level which allows to increase the XP level of the players and allows to unlock the slots of a card in order to use the skills that give an advantage to the players
