Travelling - is this a necessity or a luxury?

Traveling. One of my little quirks related to the trip abroad is that I like to learn 20-30 words in that specific language. It helps me to create a connection, and it doesn't matter how bad is my pronunciation, the people are always smiling and talking back. I love speaking in other languages, and I can do it in quite a few, with various degrees of success. One of the tricks that I use so I blend in with the locals. Especially if you have children or teenagers, travelling is one way to accumulate new experiences and open your mind to other possibilities. And the more variety you have, the better it is.

But even as an adult, learning about how other people live, all around the world, how they pray, how they work or dream, what they do when they have some free time, all of this will change you. People who never went outside their little world, village, town or country, eventually got stuck into the same routine, the same life, never imagining that something better could exist.

On my latest trips, I fell in love with two countries.

One is the Czech Republic, even if I only visited Prague. I loved the language, and if I believed in reincarnation, I think that once upon a time I lived there. It was something familiar, something different, that made me feel at home. Even if the language is Slavic, and mine is Latin. well, just check these few pictures, that I made in one of the most beautiful churches that I've ever seen. They tell a story too, if you have the patience to unravel it:

My second place, in a random order, is Istanbul. Yes, I like to visit Turkey, and its people remind me of home too, a little bit, but in a different way. The way they fight for a better life, using methods that are a bit like my favourite foods, illegal, immoral or they are getting you fat. Well, I tried a joke, but the language, also, I would love to learn Turkish, it is an Arabic language, with Latin letters, making it easier to read it or write it. But then, the pronunciation, oh boy, sometimes is something else. My tongue cannot get the right sound out, and trust me, I tried. But enough about the language, let's see some places that I liked too, and see if you would enjoy also:

Galata tower

Underground Cistern

A naughty seagull

People fishing on the bridge linking Europe to Asia

A view from the boat, travelling around the Dardanelles

Buying Turkish delight

The mosque entrance

Now I am thinking about future destinations, even if, due to causes outside my control, I may not travel with a plane for the next two years. I still didn't see France, despite being so close, as whenever I thought to go people were either fighting, protesting or having some kind of strikes. So close and yet so far. I would like to explore Iceland too, and the hardest one to achieve, I would like to visit Japan at least once. Don't even start me on South America!

Where would you like to go, if finances wouldn't be an issue?

All the best, George
