I agree with you that the characters of the film were just "cannon fodder". The parents especially were quite forgettable. After almost 5 years of seeing the film, the only scene involving a parent that I can remember is the part that the mother met her demise. Still, I liked the film. I really loved seeing a dark version of superman.
