Hello friends!
This time we watch another new TV show, and again, I share my review giving my opinion and telling a little about what the new series I recommend is about. It is different, original and impactful, but not so much for its intensity but for its intimacy.
This is a different TV show called Expats, starring the well-known Nicole Kidman, and other actors, some of whom I have seen in other productions, but they are not as popular. In any case, they attract attention for their multiculturalism in an immense, hectic and multicultural environment, in the city of Hong Kong.
TV Show: Expats (2023-2024)
This is a short miniseries, based on a novel, with an intellectual, reflective and emotional touch.
A human story, well, actually, several human stories that intertwine in an impersonal Asian environment of a large metropolis where no one seems to be from there, and at the same time everyone does. A global world that is enclosed in the crowded streets of Hong Kong and in the luxurious apartments of foreign couples who live there for work as expatriates (or expats).
What is this about?
It's about many things, about how someone's actions can affect the lives of others, how paths cross and intertwine without wanting to, how to deal with misfortunes in different ways, and how to lead a life that, deep down, is not the one we want.
In this case, it all begins with a successful, beautiful couple with three children, who, due to the husband's job, leave the USA for Hong Kong. There they lead an upper-class life, connecting with people from a similar superficial circle, until an unfortunate event happens.
The mourning begins, and the uncertainty, feelings and fears emerge, and not only in the protagonist but also in other characters. There is not only the privileged class, but also all those who serve them, the workers who sometimes go unnoticed as if they were there, but in this story, one of them connects, and then everything begins... the situation, the problem.
The series reflects these two worlds very well, the rich and the poor, each in their own world, with their own people, and it is curious how some are happy and others are not. How sometimes the problem occurs when these two classes communicate, trying but not being able to understand each other. They do not see the world in the same way, but they all suffer in some way.
The relationships between foreigners and locals are also highlighted, foreigners who in turn are from different cultures and all of them must fit in or try to fit in with another culture. It is a curious aspect that makes us reflect (especially for those of us who have lived in other different countries).
The Cast: Nicole Kidman
The star is undoubtedly Nicole Kidman, who plays the wife who moves with her family to Hong Kong, living an opulent life in her expatriate bubble, only connecting with the locals on rare occasions, and with the maid who helps her at home, who she feels is part of the family, even though she isn't...
But drama comes into her life, and everything changes, now everything is a nightmare, and her husband is considering returning, but she remains hopeful and feels that she must stay until everything is resolved. She can't leave like this.
[I don't want to be more explicit about what happens to her because I would reveal something important and it would be a SPOILER]
Anything else to comment? Photography & Scenery
There is one aspect that I like about this TV show, the photography. It is a slow, deep and emotional TV show, where moods and silences are captured very well, and the space helps to express all of that, more than the dialogues. The photography of the places, the perspectives and the panoramas are intimate despite being from a big city.
Just one season, and only six episodes. I have already watched all of them. Maybe this TV Show is not for everyone but I recommend it.
