Good day community

On the south side of the Monfragüe National Park in the province of Cáceres, belonging to the autonomous community of Extremadura, lies this small historic town, Torrejón el Rubio. Located in a strategic point to begin a visit to the entire natural and protected area of the park, the small town was the ideal place to rest and gather information about the different routes that can be taken from there. I arrived in Torrejón starting from the city of Cáceres, first on the A-58 motorway and shortly before reaching the town of Trujillo, I took the exit and drove on the EX-208 regional road until I reached my destination. As I went up from the south, to the proximity of the park, the landscape changed and I went from the area of the plains of Cáceres and Sierra de Fuentes to a more rugged and mountainous landscape near Monfragüe. My plan in the town was to get to know the streets and square and then go to visit the interpretation centre and the observatory on the outskirts of the town. I asked some very friendly local people about some special event or situation in the area and they told me about a disaster that occurred years ago due to an accident during the construction of a nearby dam. This left me intrigued about this topic. I began to walk around the town with a special charm that is also unique in this part of the country.

Walking through the picturesque streets full of colour on the facades of some houses I also observed how many of the natural resources of the area were used for their construction, such as natural stone and wood. I arrived at the centre of the town, to its main square where the town hall and the church were located. The local people were very friendly and invited me to see both buildings inside, explaining their history and architecture. The 16th century church of San Miguel Arcángel in Gothic and Renaissance style was located on a corner of the Plaza de España, a meeting place for the inhabitants of Torrejón. They also told me about the Arroyo de la Luz and its bridge, which was the small river that ran through the town.

After having lunch at a local tavern, with typical local products, cheeses, Iberian hams and lamb, I went to the tourist office to find out about the visiting hours for the interpretation centre and the observatory. I was told that the former, the interpretation centre, was open and was only a few hundred metres away. The observatory is recommended to visit when it starts to get dark due to its characteristics and because it was located a short distance from the museum-like huts in the area. A rustic path with fields and meadows, where sheep grazed freely, entertained me due to its beauty and although the weather was changeable I took advantage of it to walk for a while.

Once at the interpretation centre I saw the huts, round-shaped cabins that had been built and restored, which showed me how people built and lived in ancient times. Each hut had different aspects of daily life inside, and one of them preserved archaeological remains from a very remote period, from the Upper Palaeolithic and Neolithic. Replicas of carved stone specimens and paintings showed me the antiquity and way of life, art and socialising of those first settlers. All aspects of daily life in the place were represented and with that recreation one could intuit what their lives had been like in this town.

Opposite the interpretation centre, as night fell, was the astronomical building. Upon entering, a guide explained to me the different interpretation rooms of space that I could find. A recreation of our solar system with blue lights highlighted the colours of the planets and moons that represent the system, and another room showed larger parts of the Milky Way, our galaxy. At the top of the building, a round dome with a telescope was the icing on the cake of this visit, as it allowed me to see the sky and the stars of a small portion of the galaxy. They explained to me that in spring and summer they organised groups to explain the constellations from the countryside with recreation of lights and laser pointers to locate them.
