Following the route through the Galician lands of the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, Spain, I arrived at the city of La Coruña, one of the most important in this region. Driving inland from the entrance to the autonomous community through the Galician massif, I crossed to the northwest tip to reach this port city. Of the four Galician provinces, La Coruña houses the autonomous capital of the community, Santiago de Compostela, and other larger towns and cities, which was my objective and reason for part of this trip. The arrival this day in the city of La Coruña was conditioned by the weather, since threatening rain clouds that entered through the Atlantic Ocean invaded the skies and gave it a gray appearance with some clearings that helped me take some images that define the weather very well in this area of the country. Taking photos in this weather is another challenge for me, as I have to avoid the camera lenses getting filled with small drops, and the camera settings must be optimal to capture these moments.
Siguiendo el recorrido por las tierras gallegas del noroeste de la península Ibérica, España llegué a la ciudad de La Coruña una de las más importantes de esta región. Conduciendo por el interior desde la entrada a la comunidad autónoma por el macizo galaico atravesé hasta la punta noroeste para llegar a esta ciudad portuaria. De las cuatro provincias gallegas La Coruña alberga en su interior la capital autonómica de la comunidad, Santiago de Compostela y otras villas y localidades más grandes siendo mi objetivo y motivo de una parte de este viaje. La llegada este día a la ciudad de La Coruña estaba condicionada por el tiempo atmosférico, ya que unas amenazantes nubes de lluvia que entraban por el océano atlántico, invadían los cielos y le daban un aspecto gris con algunos claros que me ayudaron a tomar unas imágenes que definen muy bien el tiempo en esta zona del país. Fotografiar con este tiempo es para mí otro reto ya que hay que evitar que las lentes de la cámara se llenen de pequeñas gotas, además la configuración de la misma debe ser óptima para poder recoger estos instantes.
With a clear and marked division in its port area, I first went to see this part of the city. The marinas, industrial and fishing ports opened up into a large inlet, showing all their capacity and leaving the city drawn on the horizon. Remains of a remote past that dates back to the first Celtic settlements and later to Romanization, the city presented many examples and merged different defined architectural styles that give it such a unique appearance. I walked through the port control tower to go to the old fortress where time left another of the architectural legacies of this city, defensive walls, cannons and a fort among beautiful gardens took me back to this medieval era. The weather was still very threatening and my intention was to make a complete tour of this great city. Without further ado, I grabbed a map of the town and was able to observe its peculiar shape, creating a peninsula that surrounded it with a promenade that invited you to explore its surroundings.
Con una clara y marcada división en su zona portuaria me dirigí a conocer primero está parte de la ciudad. Los puertos deportivos, industriales y pesqueros se abrían en una gran ensenada mostrando toda su capacidad y dejando a la ciudad dibujada en la línea del horizonte. Restos de un pasado remoto que se remonta a los primeros poblados celtas y posteriormente a la romanización la ciudad presentaba muchos ejemplos y fusionaba diferentes estilos arquitectónicos definidos que le dan ese aspecto tan singular. Camine por la torre de control del puerto para dirigirme a la fortaleza vieja donde el tiempo dejo otro de los legados arquitectónicos de esta ciudad, murallas defensivas, cañones y un fortín entre hermosos jardines me trasladaron a esta época medieval. El tiempo seguía muy amenazante y mi intención era hacer un recorrido completo por esta gran ciudad. Sin más agarré un mapa de la villa y pude observar lo peculiar de su forma haciendo una península que la rodeaba un paseo marítimo que invitaba a recorrer todo su entorno.
Walking towards the city centre I stopped for a while observing that street with its facades and its galleries and glass windows to take advantage of the light that in this part of the country and due to its geographical location is scarce. The people who live and reside in this part of the country must live conditioned by this peculiar Atlantic climate with a lot of rain, fog and take advantage of these hours of sunlight through this type of architecture to improve the habitability of their homes. Right in front of this mythical street of the city is its fishing port and the area where large transatlantic and sports ships have their mooring point. I can tell you that when I visit towns, villages or cities one of the places that excites me the most and that I like to observe are their ports and their characteristics. Boats of different sizes and colours rest in very calm waters protected by the breakwaters and by the peculiar shape of this part of the coast.
Caminando hacia el centro de la ciudad me detuve un buen rato observando aquella calle con sus fachadas y sus galerías y cristaleras para aprovechar la luz que en esta zona del país y debido a su situación geográfica es poca. La gente que vive y reside en esta parte del país debe vivir condicionada por este peculiar clima atlántico con mucha lluvia, nieblas y aprovechar por medio de este tipo de arquitectura esas horas solares para mejorar la habitabilidad de sus hogares. Justo enfrente de esta calle mítica de la ciudad esta su puerto pesquero y la zona donde grandes trasatlánticos y deportiva tiene su punto de atraque. Fe de deciros que cuando visito pueblos, villas o ciudades uno de los lugares que más me emociona y me gusta observar son sus puertos y sus características. Barcos de diferentes tamaños y colores descansan en unas aguas muy tranquilas protegidas por los espigones y por la forma peculiar de esta parte de la costa.
On this route through the port I entered one of the streets presided over by a large arch and which led me into the heart of the city, its main square. This square called María Pita surprised me with its size and majesty. Its main building had an architecture that mixed different styles and is very representative of this region. Its side streets invite us to its restaurants, bars, taverns and shops to taste typical products and it is one of the things that I like most in the cities of this northern region of the country, the culture of pintxos and wines. I was able to taste some of these delicacies and enjoy this special local cuisine. This characteristic of going from bar to bar tasting these regional wines always accompanied by excellent regional cuisine always surprises visitors. Then I walked for a while through the arcades and around the perimeter of the square where I had some conversations with people from the city who told me about this woman, María Pita, a symbol of the resistance of this beautiful city.
En esta ruta del puerto penetre por una de las calles que presidia un gran arco y que me introducía en el corazón de la ciudad, su plaza mayor. Esta plaza llamada de María Pita me sorprendió por su tamaño y majestuosidad. Su edificio principal tenía una arquitectura que mezclaba diferentes estilos y que es muy representativa de esta región. Sus calles laterales nos invitan a sus restaurantes, bares, tabernas y locales comerciales a los productos típicos y es una de las cuestiones que más me gusta en las ciudades de esta región norte del país, la cultura de los pinchos y vinos. Pude degustar algunos de estos manjares y disfrute de esta especial gastronomía autóctona. Siempre sorprende al visitante esta característica de ir de bar en bar catando estos caldos de la región siempre acompañados por la excelente cocina regional. Luego camine un rato por los soportales y por todo el perímetro de la plaza donde mantuve algunas conversaciones con personas de la ciudad que me hablaban de esta mujer, María Pita, símbolo de la resistencia de esta hermosa ciudad.
I could not leave without seeing the most significant monument and World Heritage Site of the city, the Tower of Hercules. Located at the foot of a rock and surrounded by cliffs, this Roman lighthouse is the only one in the world that is still active today. It was a guide for many sailors for many centuries and its geographical position at the northern tip of the city gives it these unique characteristics. I would like to extend an invitation to visit this entire region of Spain of friendly, cosmopolitan people and tireless workers. Greetings to all.
No podía irme sin ver el monumento más significativo y patrimonio de la humanidad de la ciudad, la torre de Hércules. Situado al pie de un peñón y rodeado de acantilados este faro romano es el único en el mundo que aun se encuentra activo en la actualidad. Fue guía durante muchos siglos de muchos navegantes y su posición geográfica en la punta norte de la ciudad le da estas características tan singulares. Quiero extenderles una invitación a visitar toda esta región de España de personas amables, gentes cosmopolitas y incansables trabajadores. Saludos a todos.
