Colonia Tovar: A Little Piece of Germany in Venezuela [Eng-Esp]/ La colonia Tovar: Un pedacito de Alemania en Venezuela

¡Hello travelers again, it's time for a new adventure! Nestled in the mountains of Aragua state, just 56 kilometers from Caracas, is Colonia Tovar, a picturesque village that looks like something out of a German fairy tale. Its cobblestone streets, half-timbered wooden houses and red-tiled roofs transport visitors to Central Europe, without the need to cross the Atlantic.

The sun was barely peeking over the mountains when my alarm clock went off at 5:20 am. It seemed to be an ordinary Sunday with a routine morning, one of those that go by between coffee and obligations. But no, this was a different day. A day marked by the promise of adventure, a day that would take me to discover a little piece of Germany nestled in the Venezuelan mountains: Colonia Tovar.

With excitement on our faces, we headed for the bus stop. The cold of the early morning mixed with the tingle of excitement. Between dreams and pleasant conversations, the trip went by in the blink of an eye. At 8:50 a.m., the bus was already parked in Colonia Tovar, ready to begin the tour to the tourist attractions of the place.

A feast for the senses

The aroma of hot chocolate and strawberries and cream filled the air, like a sweet welcome to this earthly paradise. The first stop was the coffee plantation, where we learned about the coffee elaboration process, from planting to the steaming cup. The aroma of roasted beans permeated every corner, awakening the taste buds and transporting us to a green and sunny field.

The first stop was necessary. We started the journey at a coffee shop where the owners welcome you and tell you the story of how the family has been making coffee for 40 years and maintain the family tradition of doing it the traditional way, without industrializing the sweet coffee that is produced in the plantations that bear fruit in the high and cold zone of Colonia Tovar.

The next adventure took us to the brewery, where we discovered the secrets of craft beer brewing. We tasted different types of beers, each with a unique flavor that reflected the passion and care of their creators. The real craze was the parchita beer. There we made a toast to life, to the joy of sharing and to the magic of this special place.

The wine cellar of the winery was waiting for us with its great variety of flavors and its bottles full of stories. We toured the facilities, learned about the winemaking process and enjoyed a tasting that delighted our palates. The fruity flavor and intense aroma of the wine intoxicated us with sensations, transporting us to a Tuscan landscape under the radiant sun, also full of flavors such as parchita and blackberry, which were also my favorite wines, although I confess we ended up buying a sangria to share at home.

The cheese factory opened its doors to show us the art of making artisanal goat cheese. We listened attentively to the elaboration process, from the selection of the milk to the maturing process in centenary cellars. We tasted fresh, semi-cured and cured cheeses, each with a unique texture and flavor that captivated us and I swear I could spend the day eating smoked cheese, if you go to Colonia Tovar do not miss it.

And finally, the finishing touch: the chocolatito. A great place where handmade chocolates are made with love and dedication. They welcome you with a big bonfire and free marshmallows inserted in a wooden wand with which you will be able to bring your marshmallow to the fire and live the real experience of a cold Germany, in the Venezuelan mountains. There we tasted a cocoa and hazelnut based chocolate, truffles and nougat bars dipped in milk chocolate, each with a flavor that conquered us completely. A sweet end to an unforgettable adventure.
