I have been absent for some time as you might have noticed if you are following my posts.
Yes, we've been away, spending time with my wife's brother and his family in Cape Town for a few days!
I was determined to publish a post or two during that time, but that was just not going to happen....lol! We were out and about and whenever we returned home, it was family time! We really had lots of fun and the time in Cape Town was awesome.
Over the next few days/weeks, I will share some of the adventures and outings we enjoyed.
The Tallest Lighthouse in South Africa.
As you all know, I love lighthouses. On one of our outings, my brother-in-law, took us out on a drive along the Cape Peninsula, south of Cape Town.
We travelled through Simons Town and down the eastern side, until we eventually moved across to the western side where we stopped over in Scarborough for lunch.
From there we continued our journey back towards Cape Town, going through another small coastal town, called "Kommetjie".
Just before we entered Kommetjie, I noticed this beautiful Lighthouse to the left below us.
Unfortunately we couldn't find a safe place to pull over. There were traffic approaching from far behind, so my brother-in-law went as slow as he possibly could. But, still, I had to take these images from a moving vehicle, so I did the best I could...lol!
Arriving back in Durban, I started looking for information on this lighthouse, and here is what I found:
- The Slangkop (Snake Head) Lighthouse, is the tallest cast iron lighthouse in South Africa.
- According Wikipedia, the height of the tower is 33 meters (108 ft.), and
- the focal height of the light is 40 meters (130 ft).
The Slangkop Lighthouse is regarded as a tourist attraction with an entrance fee of only R16.00 per person (approximately $1.18 at the time writing), and only R8.00 per kid (under 12).
Apparently there are guided tours available, taking you up to the top of the tower.
Unfortunately, we ran out of time, but this is definitely going onto our list of places to visit when we revisit Cape Town again.
That's it for today, folks.
Thank you for reading my post! I do appreciate it!
