Located in the heart of the medina, the ‘Moulay Ismail’ mausoleum is a tribute to the emperor Moulay Ismaïl, known for his strong personality and his reign marked by the unification of Morocco in the 17th century.
Before entering the majestic mausoleum of Moulay Ismaïl, let me show you this impressive entrance. Look at this giant doorway rising up in all its splendour! It's a real work of art that invites contemplation. The elegantly decorated arches seem to tell a piece of history, a glimpse of the glorious days when this place was thriving. The detail of the motifs on the structure and the soft colour of the walls contrast so well with the blue sky in the background.
Just below the great arches, you can glimpse the interior, which seems even more mysterious. It's like an invitation to cross over to the other side, to step through this massive door and discover a sacred space filled with history and memory. This simple, elegant gate gently prepares visitors for the contemplation that awaits them inside. Frankly, every time I stand there, I feel tiny in the face of the immensity of these walls, but also honoured to witness this place that exudes the authenticity and grandeur of a bygone era.
We begin our visit with this magnificent exterior section just outside the main door. Look at these three finely decorated niches! Each is adorned with detailed mosaics with geometric motifs, typical of Islamic art. The wall shows signs of age, with some discolouration and peeling paint, adding to the ancient charm of the place. Above the niches is a decorative metal balustrade.
These designs are not only aesthetically pleasing, they represent Moroccan heritage and craftsmanship, with each tile carefully cut and assembled by hand. The balustrade adds an elegant touch and recalls the era when this mausoleum was built.
Here I am in front of the majestic main door of the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail! Observe the beauty and complexity of this entrance. The solid wooden door is decorated with detailed carvings and geometric motifs typical of Islamic art. The white columns framing the door add a touch of elegance. Above the door, a roof covered in green tiles completes the ensemble, adding a regal and soothing dimension.
The carved motifs on the door and columns tell a story of devotion and the talent of Moroccan craftsmen. Every detail bears witness to the rich cultural heritage of Moulay Ismail's time.
As you enter the main door of the mausoleum, you are immediately struck by the peaceful and majestic atmosphere inside. The first thing you find is a beautiful hall with a small fountain at its centre. The walls and floor are adorned with colourful mosaics in geometric patterns, adding a touch of splendour to the place. Opposite is an arch leading to a staircase, inviting visitors to explore further.

This is the central hall of the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. This inner courtyard is a true masterpiece of Islamic art and architecture. In the centre, a hexagonal fountain decorated with tiles adds a touch of serenity and freshness.
Walls adorned with arches and detailed carvings add to the beauty of the place. Hanging lanterns complete the traditional ambience, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The green-tiled roof adds a finishing touch, highlighting the area's rich cultural and architectural heritage.
Another hall adjacent to the central hall. Look at these two large, elegantly erected columns of light-coloured stone (symbols of the grandeur of the era). Between them is a beautifully carved stone pedestal. The wall behind is decorated with an intricate pattern of mosaics in a variety of colours, including green, black, white and brown. The floor, with its geometric pattern, complements the wall design perfectly.
It's a space that invites contemplation, where you can feel the soul of that era and imagine life in ancient Meknes during the reign of Moulay Ismaïl. For visitors, it offers not only a glimpse of the past but also a visual experience that reflects the finesse of Moroccan architecture.
In the magnificent great hall that leads to the tomb of Sultan Moulay Ismail, you must remove your shoes to enter out of respect for the place.
Admire the meticulous detail of the white plaster ornamentation on the walls and arches. The geometric patterns create a breathtaking visual spectacle. The white marble columns with their decorative capitals add to the elegance of the room. The floor is covered in red carpets, creating a striking contrast with the ornate walls.
The majestic chandelier hanging from the ceiling illuminates the room with a warm glow. At the back of the room is a beautifully carved wooden door.
Here we are in front of the tomb of one of the most influential sovereigns in Moroccan history, Moulay Ismail. This room is a true masterpiece of art and architecture. Majestic arches and beautifully sculpted columns surround the tomb, creating a solemn and peaceful atmosphere.
The floor is covered with elaborately patterned red carpets, adding a touch of majesty and respect to the place. Suspended chandeliers gently illuminate the room, highlighting the intricate details of the wall decorations. Clocks on the sides add to the overall ambience of this sacred place.
The tomb itself is magnificently decorated and well-maintained, testifying to the importance and respect accorded to this great sovereign.
