Travelling to Castro Urdiales

in Worldmappinyesterday

During the last two years I have been travelling to the town of Castro Urdiales several times due to a big work project.

This town is incredibly beautiful when you walk along the promenade that connects the beach of Brazomar with the town centre.

Seeing the port with small boats with the basilica and the castle-lighthouse in the background is one of those postcard moments that will stay with you forever.

Walking along the breakwater that separates the harbour from the open sea at sunset is also a magical place. Especially on spring days when the sky takes on different tones.

For some months now, after the remodeling of the lighthouse at the entrance to the harbor, the route to the lighthouse has also been a place to stroll along, with the added bonus of a special view of the basilica, the castle-lighthouse and the Roman bridge on the way back to the village.

The basilica is one of the basilicas that I like the most, even though it does not quite reach the category of a cathedral.

Above all because of its location, which is practically on the sea.

A sea that bathes the whole of Castro-Urdiales, as we can see from the different viewpoints in the area.

The Saltacaballo viewpoint is one of the ones I like to visit. From there we can see the small hills almost at the foot of the sea that contrast with the separation of mountain and sea that exists in other areas of the planet.

And on clear days, the blue of the sky and the sea blend with the green mantle so characteristic of this part of Spain.

I have not visited Castro Urdiales for about 4 months now, but on a cold and windy day like this Sunday morning, writing about this beautiful place is allowing me to travel to this fishing village with a whaling past.

A town where fishing is today one of its economic engines and of which they are proud of the many statues that reflect fishing activities such as the preparation of the nets or the street sale of fish.

They also reflect this in their urban art and murals.

Urban art that I photographed some time ago on one of my first visits to the city. I was captivated by this mural of a sailor with a penetrating gaze. But unfortunately, a few months ago it was replaced by another mural with a children's theme, which I decided not to photograph, as it hardly caught my attention as an internal protest.

And of course, in its restaurants, where you can enjoy delicious fish-based dishes.

I recommend the seafood restaurant by the harbour with its hake and monkfish as star dishes.

Without a doubt, I have to find an excuse to return to Castro Urdiales in the near future.
