This is my post for #freewriters 2371 prompt safe but unsound hosted by @mariannewest
This was the dock that went out to the fish house that we used to fish for. In 2004 we had back to back hurricanes. I know I have told this story before but it fits this prompt. I took the above picture before the first hurricane hit which was Hurricane Francis.
This picture was taken the next morning after the hurricane went by, there was a lot of debris washed onto the dock and some of the boards were missing. If you walked in the right places you could get to the fish house, you could say it was safe but unsound.
When something like this happens the fishermen help the owners clean up and replace dock boards. This was one of the things that had always happened, we helped each other. Along with all of the fish houses, it is now missing in our town. Like all small towns when something like this happens, I am sure they pull together to help, but something changes when a town grows, people no longer help each other. I have not figured out what changes.
When the second hurricane hit, it took away all of the repairs plus all of the boards leading to the fish house, they lost both ice machines and the fish house was not safe to go into. We had our clam boat tied in a hole on the east side of the river and brought it back and tied it to the dock, we only lost the roof and the doors on the rolling table, but we also lost one of our anchors because the rope broke, we had four anchors, one on each corner. The boat is now sitting in the woods by our house. Now the trees have grown all around it and I think it will be there forever.
