The 47 year wait

“On many long journeys have I gone. And waited, too, for others to return from journeys of their own. Some return; some are broken; some come back so different only their names remain.”

- Yoda -

I was an extremely excited seven year old that day back in 1977 when my dad took me to see Star Wars. It had been released for several weeks but my parents had to save up for the event, money was a little scarce for my parents, so everyone I knew had already seen it. I felt like an outcast for not having been to see it yet but that was soon to be rectified and I had grand visions of huge buckets of popcorn, a vanilla choc top ice cream and a gargantuan cup of cold soda; The reality was a medium sized popcorn shared with my older brother but I got a soda to myself and I was happy...I was seeing Star Wars and that's all that mattered.

It was, to my seven year old imagination, the most amazing thing I'd ever seen and I straight away began to style myself after Han Solo, the coolest dude there was! I remember the day fondly, my dad and my older brother hanging out watching an amazing movie, and all these years later the thought of it still makes me smile; it's one of those childhood memories that seems not to fade.

I've seen all of the Star Wars movies since then, multiple times, and enjoy them greatly. It's not just the movies that bring enjoyment though, it's the link seeking them reconnects to that day back in 1977 when I saw the fist movie for the first time and fell in love with it and the fact I spent that day with my dad and connected with something he loved, science fiction.

Fast forwarding through the years, I've said on so many occasions how I'd like to get the box set of movies so I can watch them any time I like but I have never gotten them for some reason. How many hints can one drop for birthdays and Christmas to one's partner before one gives up? Well, loads! Also, with streaming services it's easy to stream the movies right to my TV I guess, so I never bought the box set...until now.

Last Sunday I bought the Star Wars box set in Blue-Ray disc and, I have to say, I'm feeling like Han Solo flying the Millennium Falcon at warp speed after escaping the clutches of Jabba the Hutt...ok, maybe I don't feel quite that good, but I feel pretty fucken good! The box set was $110AUD which seems like good value to me, $18.33 per movie and a bonus 90 minutes of other content is ok considering I'll watch each of them multiple times...and can pause the Princess Leia bikini scene as often as I want as well! (Just kidding...not really...dead serious). Anyway, all that aside, I think I waited long enough, 47 years, and now I'm the proud owner of all six movies.

Have you ever waited a long time to get something you really wanted? If so what was it, how important to you was it and why did you wait? Feel free to comment below if you'd like to, I'm always happy to hear from you.

Sort:

I am 2 years younger than you and only saw Star Wars when Empire Strikes Back was released. I also remember both vividly.

Such a pity the woke mind virus at Disney has destroyed the franchise.
But the 6 main series movies you bought are classics.

I might get it too.

I've not seen any of the spin-off Star Wars series and probably won't for the reasons you allude to; it's a pity really, that it went that way and one could see it coming even in the latest three movies, little bits here and there that hinted at wokeiness.

The Book of Boba Fett and Mandalorian series were pretty good... even though they are Disney products. I think Jon Favreau did a good job trying to make a good return to creating something for the actual fans and was just caught in the middle of the shitstorm. He based them off of old Spaghetti Westerns and I think he did well with that motif. I would recommend checking them out if any aside from the paused Bikini scene. hahaha

Bikini scenes? I'm there! Lol.

I have no doubt I'll see them at some stage. I've heard a little about them and whilst disappointed that Disney sort of took things in less desirable directions I'm not one to judge based on other people's opinions; seeing them for myself is the only way to know.

I was talking about your Princess Leia bikini scene. hahaha
Although, there are a couple of hotties at the saloon!

I think that when you do watch them that you will enjoy and appreciate them. They aren't quite to the nostalgia level and meaningfulness of the original 3... but they were more true to the lore and fans with the series than the last 3 movies in my opinion.

I always wondered why everyone was such a big Boba Fett fan because he died pretty easy in the movies and didn't do much ass kicking. But, after seeing the show and hearing one of my friends explain his story from the books and comics... i can totally see why people fell in love with that mysterious character.

Jon Favreau was/is the best thing that has happened to Star Wars in many many years. They have a nerd fan test before hiring anyone to make these intellectual properties! hahaha

One must be adept at spotting the hotties right? Flip ya, loser gets the yellow one.

I like the Boba Fett character so think I'd like the series...I'll get around to it one of these days.

Lol.

1977 remember it well, I was just five at the time and Dad was working in London for Corgi. It must have been the school holidays, mum sent me out with Dad for the day and up to the big city we went. It was the first time I ever went to the cinema, The Odeon, Leicester Square. Darth Vader scared the bejesus out of me!!! I was terrified but was enchanted by the rest of the film. I’ve still got the LP of the Soundtrack. Think it’s at mums and dads.

I had the same reaction to Darth Vader. It's cool you have that memory though, the day with your dad which seems much like mine.

I was quite excited to get the box set and have watched Star Wars IV so far...maybe another tonight. That's right I'm watching them in the same order they were released. #oldschool

Hi Galen, There is one thing, I think only one, that I had to wait years to be able to have. My Trchnics SL-1200 MK2 turntable. I wanted one since I was 14 or 15 years old, and I didn't get one until I was 30. It's still an expensive whim, so when I had the money to buy one, there were always other priorities.

And I didn't want to miss the opportunity to show you my Star Wars trilogy pack on VHS. The box has deteriorated, doing some work at home (and the truth is I was very upset), the inside is impeccable and you can still see the films (the first montage of them). I also remember the premiere of Star Wars, I had to wait weeks to see it, and I still remember the impact it had on me and my friends.

In a few moments I will be leaving Madrid and will be out all day; so maybe not until tomorrow. Have a nice afternoon.

Best Regards

That's a cool thing to wait for and I'm glad you go it; you're right though, one must prioritise expenditure and if that means the need for patience...well so be it right?

Old School VHS Star Wars...Now that's older than Yoda! (Ok, maybe not quite that old.) It's cool that you have them on VHS although I don't even know if it's possible to watch VHS tapes any more.

So, enjoy Madrid, sounds legit; I want to go there one day.

What you say about VHS, at least I can't watch them, which says a lot about how rare human beings can be; an animal that keeps useless things. Or, from another point of view, how important are memories and the objects that hold them. Greetings

I remember seeing the first one on the TV then the empire Strikes Back in the cinema. It was incredible and there was nothing like it at the time to fire up a young boys imagination!

It all seemed so amazing to me. Keep in mind there wasn't much on TV when I was seven and living in a little country town. We were outdoors kids anyway.

Seeing Star Wars brought things to life though, sword fighting was light sabre fighting, my push bike was an X-Wing fighter and Princess Leia...well, enough said I think. Lol.

I'm pretty pleased to have the box set in BlueRay...watched Episode IV the other day and it took me right back to 1977 again.

TV didn't have much and in general it was shite!

Yeah, that makes me smile just thinking about those days in the sun, light sabre fighting and stormtrooper blasting. Funny, even though this is Scotland my childhood memories are often sunny 😀

Sunny childhood memories huh? You sure you're not an Australian who was swiped by a Scottish couple and spirited away to Scotlandia where the fucken sun only shines for three minutes a year?

I lost count of how many stormtroopers I blasted and light sabred as a kid...good times indeed.

Aye, it was all golden sunshine days. Then snow then sun again. Cake remember shit weather but that's probably a testament to human memory!

I was 11 when the first one came out, so the perfect age. I was jealous of a friend who saw it several times plus he got some merchandise as his dad worked at Texas Instruments who did a Star Wars watch.

I had a set of the original 3 on VHS (non-widescreen) and we have some DVDs now, but they are all on Disney+ anyway. One of these days I need to watch them all again.

The quality of the later movies has been variable, but I have enjoyed some of the TV shows. It make me laughs when people go on about 'woke'. What's woke about fighting an evil Empire? Some people seem to be on the Empire's side. Star Wars broke the mould anyway with black and female characters playing a big part.

That kid was livin' large Star Wars style! Bastard! Lol.

I have enough streaming services and don't need another so decided to get the BlueRays instead. I think Disney+ has the Mandalorian right? I've been tempted to pay for it but figure I'll draw the line at four streaming services.

We just pay for Netflix and Disney+. The Mandalorian is good and so is Andor. There's another one coming about Jedi and Sith. Then there's all the animated stuff, but I don't have time to watch it all.

I struggle to find the time to watch my h but when I have it I like choice. I'll revisit the Disney+ option at some stage and watch them all I suppose.

You could just get it for a few months to watch what you want. I'm not wanting to take on more subscriptions.

That's how I ended up with Prime...wanted to watch The Terminal List but ended up keeping it. That's how they hook people in I guess. I just keep the subscriptions for just in case I want to watch something. Watching Fire Country at the moment, pretty good, and just finished Altered Carbon.

I started wearing wrist watches very early and had loved them so much as a kid (I don't even remember to wear them anymore). Dad bought me one when I was going to live with my Grandma in the village, but honestly I wanted something much better, an Oris. Dad complained that I was too young to wear something so expensive but promised to get me one if I did very well in my entrance examination into high school. It was a four year wait and trust me to remind him of his promise when I performed excellently and gained admission into high school. Dad had forgotten all about it but he is an honourable man, he did redeem his promise.

I like watches, wear one every day and have some pretty cool ones which I've photographed and posted here a little while ago. Why don't you wear one these days?

It was primarily for checking out time (I'm very time conscious) and in this era of phones, I do not deem it necessary.

It was primarily for checking out time

Watches are for checking the time? Miraculous inventions!

(I kind of know what watches are for. Lol)

That line of yours cracked me up. 🤣

I meant that the reason I wore it back then was to observe time.... Lols. 😂

I know what you meant, but I'm not about to give up the chance to misinterpret it and get a laugh.

Don't worry, my opportunity would come soon when I would get a laugh too 😂

Probably, keep an eye out for your opportunity.

I can imagine how you feel! Waiting so long to have something you really wanted for so long. Congratulations !!!!!

I was thinking when I was reading you about my own experience, there were many things I had to wait a long time for... my own cool easel... and recently my first camera!!!! The first cool camera! I'm missing the lens but I'm in the process. And soon .... waited a long time for something... I don't have it yet but I plan to get it: my tablet to draw on it!!!! Shhh don't say anything!

An easel is a good thing to wait for and I bet you put it to good use but...did you wait 47 years?

That lens will happen soon to complete your camera set-up and you'll be unstoppable!

And you know what???? Here I can take my camera on the street without fear of it being stolen, in Argentina I couldn't even go out with my phone!

No, not 47 years old... I'm 45 hahaha and this year I'll be 46!

But I've wanted the camera since I was a teenager.

Well, by the time you reach 46 you'll have waited 46 years to be 46! 🤔🤪

That's true!!! Less time to go!!! I still look 30🤣

Oh, I'm so glad you've already got what you wanted. 😁

If the mountain doesn't go to Muhammad, Muhammad goes to the mountain... but you've shown great patience. 47 years!

Yep, it's a long time to wait but the time went by so fast...it only felt like 46 years and 364 days.

Yes, I have. I had waited more than one year to get my first 8-bit game console. It was a gift for a succesfull year in the school :)

That sounds like a perfect thing to get for your achievement...and while you were waiting you were gaining good results at school, a double win.

Star Wars and Jurassic Park were some of the movies I saw in a Laser Disc. The original Star Wars movies are timeless. The prequels were not as appreciated when they came out (mostly because of Jarjar), but fans eventually warmed up to it. Time will tell with the sequels. The Lord of the Rings movies was this for me. There are added content in the DVD that were not shown in the theatrical release.

Jar Jar Binks was the biggest failure of the Star Wars franchise...I'be have sliced him up with a light sabre if I was able, or fed him to Jabba The Hutt. I hope whomever came up with that character was fired.

I like Lord of the Rings also and have them on BlueRay along with all the Hobbit movies too., I watch them often.

Tosser 👆

I hope whomever came up with that character was fired.

I agree. Them thinking why the movies need a joke character eludes me. Will you be getting the 9 movie compilation if it comes out?

Nine Star Wars movies...hmm, yeah I probably will although I'll have to start saving up now.

I can't remember where I saw the first one. It came out before I was born, but I remember seeing the second one in the theater. I also remember seeing most all of the Star Trek movies in the theater except the first one.

I actually never got into the Star Trek thing although have seen a couple of the older movies and one of the newer ones and didn't mind them. I used to like the original Battlestar Galactica series as a kid though, and Buck Rogers in the 21st Century. I remember he had a cute female side kick, Colonel Wilma Deering (played by Erin Gray) who wore a very tight outfit - easy on the eyes for sure.

image.png

I remember some of those shows too. I don't remember which one it was, but there was a robot named Twinkie or something like that.

Yeah, Twiki,* was the robot in Buck Rogers. The show only ran from 1979-1981 - I thought it was cool.

I also remember the original V, but that came on too late at night so I didn't get to watch it.

I remember V as well, pretty good.

I'm glad you finally got your toy !

I do understand the sweet emotional connection we have to certain things when they bring back such wonderful memories.

I'm a pretty nostalgic chap I guess, things and memories.

My father also took me to the cinema when I was seven years old.
We watched Conan the Barbarian.
I remember that months after watching that movie in the cinema, I was waving a stick in our house, imagining that I was holding a sword in my hands.
As for Star Wars, although I didn't know how to read yet, when Part VI, Return of the Jedi, came out in 1983, I went to the local cinema with my friends several times (we hid, we didn't leave the theater and we watched the movie in two times 😀) . a few years later, when the films became available on VHS, I watched all three parts (IV, V and again VI), and waited after many years for the sequels...

You waited for 47 years, but you waited for something that was your boyhood wish...
I waited as an adult 😀
In 2015, I saw a car model for the first time that I really liked.
Nissan, 2014 model.
I had an idea to buy a used previous model from 2009, but when I saw the new model, I knew there was no way I could get the old model.
When it was time to replace the car, I started looking for it on car stores.
It was the weekend, 14.03.2020. I looked one car, tried it out, prepare the money, but on monday the state of emergency was imposed due to covid and shut us down for months.
Fear of uncertainty, problems with health and investments, led to the fact that I only bought the desired car in the spring of 2023, three years later...
When I add it up, I saw it in 2015, bought it in 2023. 8 years... Lot of years, but OK, it was a bigger investment...

Conan, another blast from the past that is worth watching!

As for waiting, I think there's nothing wrong with it but people tend not to want to these days and that's where they fall into crippling credit debt. There's something to be said for patience right?

The old saying goes: "Patient, saved".

It is true that when things are returned, some things are not of the same quality and we don't want to see them, but we still remember some things from our childhood, which will be brought back, so we will remember them. Will definitely see and we will be very happy.

Yeah, I agree with you.

Thanks.

As I read, I'm wondering too. What was the thing that I waited for so long and now I have it already? Everything that I have now, took me 21 years to get. This comfortable life where I can afford to buy my pancit canton. @galenkp

I don't what pancit canton is buying one's own sounds magnificent.

Pancit canton is dry noodles in the Philippines like shin ramyun in Korea. When I was young, it was a luxury to buy it since it cannot be divided into five. Being able to afford it was worth the wait. @galenkp

and a bonus 90 minutes of other content

What's in that 90 minutes, is that an extra movie?

In what you're holding, it says 90minutes of Star Wars Spoof, what was that.

I've only watched 3 of the Star Wars movies.

The answer to your question is in the line below your question; what it is remains to be seen and won't be known until its seen. (This means I've not seen it yet so have no clue.)

Quite an interesting story. Teachings persistence and resilience in pursuing one's desire.
I'm not sure I've waited that long for something (or maybe I don't remember or could be I'm already waiting for a dream I might not take notice of)
But from your story, I have gotten that being determined and focus could pay off someday.

I'm used to waiting for things...I mean, I'm 54 and I waited 54 years to become 54. Patience is a virtue, they say.

One thing I know I have waited for was to marry a man who will love and support me. I've gotten that in my husband.
Having the ability to wait and not give up or give in to other options makes us stronger

One must be patient at times, and know when to push on things a little more, to act, I guess too right?
