Hello, Hivians and Anime Lovers! How are you? I hope you're all as happy as the stories in your favorite anime.
In this post, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on two anime that left a lasting impression on me after watching and following them—sports anime!
When it comes to basketball anime, two legendary names always come to mind: Slam Dunk and Kuroko no Basket. These two are like magnetic poles—equally strong, but attracting fans with vastly different appeals. And as someone who has watched both, I’m often asked: which one is better?
Let’s dive into both, based on my experience.
Slam Dunk: The Father of Basketball Anime
Why the "Father"? Let’s start with the classic, Slam Dunk. Premiering in 1993, this anime has the distinct charm of the 90s. Even though I watched it online much later, I can only imagine how thrilling it must have been to see it on TV or read the manga back in the 90s.
The story centers on Hanamichi Sakuragi, a high schooler initially obsessed with love (read: his crush on Haruko) who ends up diving into the world of basketball. From a delinquent rookie who can’t even score a basket, Sakuragi grows into an extraordinary player. It’s a testament to how motivation can turn someone into something remarkable.
Slam Dunk captivates many with its realistic approach. The basketball games aren’t filled with outlandish tricks or over-the-top cinematic effects; they feel like games you’d see on a real school court. Plus, the character development is profound. Not only will you fall in love with Sakuragi, but also with his teammates like the cool Rukawa and the firm captain Akagi.
That said, let’s be honest—how often did you get frustrated with Sakuragi’s obsession with Haruko? It’s like watching a friend endlessly rant about a crush you know has no chance. Yet, its emotional moments and comedic bits keep you hooked.
And don’t forget The First Slam Dunk Movie, recently released as a nostalgic masterpiece. With 3D-CG technology, it’s like a sweet gift for fans who’ve waited over 20 years.
If you haven’t seen it yet, add it to your watchlist. I’ve watched it myself, and I’ll probably write about it in a future post!
Kuroko no Basket: Fantastical Basketball Action
Now let’s fast-forward to 2012 and talk about Kuroko no Basket. This anime takes basketball and mixes it with superhero-like action. Players can enter the "Zone," a special state that unlocks their unique abilities. The story focuses on Tetsuya Kuroko, whose specialty lies in being the "shadow"—a master of assists and behind-the-scenes play.
Kuroko no Basket is famous for its fantastical approach. Every character has a special technique that feels almost superhuman. For instance, there’s a player who can shoot from anywhere on the court and always score. (Seriously, is this basketball or an RPG?) The dramatic and intense action makes every match feel like an NBA final.
However, not everyone loves this approach. The biggest critique of Kuroko is its over-the-top fantasy elements. Many say, “This isn’t basketball—it’s magic!” While others argue it turns the court into a battleground for superheroes. But for those who love spectacular action, this anime is a goldmine. Its unpredictable twists keep viewers glued to the screen, and the stunning animation by Production I.G adds a magical touch to every frame.
And let’s not forget the ending. From the main series to the final movie, Kuroko no Basket wraps up satisfyingly. Unlike Sakuragi, who took 20 years to return to the screen (no offense, Slam Dunk fans—just a little joke!).
So, Which One is Better?
This question is like asking, “Do you prefer black coffee or a latte?” The answer depends on your taste. If you prefer a realistic, emotional story with life lessons, then Slam Dunk is your choice. It doesn’t just inspire you to play basketball but also teaches values like hard work and friendship.
However, if you’re into dramatic action, stunning visuals, and "magical" moments, then Kuroko no Basket is the way to go. This anime is an emotional roller coaster that keeps you entertained every step of the way.
For me, both hold a special place. Slam Dunk is nostalgia—a classic that teaches life lessons. Meanwhile, Kuroko no Basket is modern entertainment that always leaves me thrilled.
Recommendations for You
If you’re new to both anime, I suggest watching them both. Start with Slam Dunk to appreciate the fundamentals of basketball and enjoy a grounded story. Then move on to Kuroko no Basket to see how basketball can be taken to a whole new level.
And don’t worry—even if basketball isn’t your thing, both anime have stories that can captivate anyone. Themes of friendship, teamwork, and competitive spirit are universal.
So grab some snacks, sit back, and let these anime take you into a world of sports and passion.
Who knows, after watching, you might even want to try playing basketball for real. Just don’t expect to enter the "Zone" like in Kuroko! If you’re being realistic, start with Sakuragi’s lay-up skills.
Happy watching!
