Thermos Day + Día del Termo [Eng+Spa]

in We Are Alive Tribe10 months ago
Monday, start of the week. This February 26 we have been a little low on health at home, the weather was a little cool, and we may have caught a bit of a cold. We had pending repairs at home, but we couldn't attend to them, we will have to do the work tomorrow. Outside these minor things, there is nothing new to tell about my #life. So I can comment on the topic that gives me the title of this post.

I know that there are all kinds of celebrations and anniversaries of #History, there are even special days to celebrate peculiar artifacts. But, I didn't know that there was a day to celebrate containers capable of maintaining the temperature level of the liquids inside. However, when I saw the list, I found out that today is 'Thermos Day'.

A #thermos is a double-layer container (separated by a vacuum space) that provides some resistance to the thermal exchange of a liquid with respect to its environment, passively. Well, that sounds very technical, like a #science topic, but when reviewing the history of this invention, I found that it was initially a laboratory gadget. The closest thing to what we know today as thermoses was the product of the research of James Dewar, a Scottish physicist and chemist.

Here comes another curiosity, the name we give to this thing today, thermos, is more of a later designation. This container was originally called a 'Dewar flask' or 'Dewar bottle'.

In 1892, Dewar was researching the specific heat of palladium, as part of his work in physics, specifically cryogenics. Being a matter in which he was quite innovative, he had to make use of the best equipment and gadgets that he could have available, as a Professor at the University of Cambridge. But, he encountered new and peculiar challenges, so he also created some instruments of his own, among these, he designed a glass container, which consisted of two layers of glass separated by a vacuum. That proved to be quite useful in his investigation.

This man gave several interesting contributions in his fields of work, but I want to focus on the thermos, so I must leave it to him and go on to name other people who collaborated so that the object became as we know it today. Among these we have, in 1904, Reinhold Burger and a fellow glassblower (both German), who discovered its commercial application to keep drinks (hot or cold), so they proceeded to work to create their version, patent it, and put it up for sale. These Germans used a word with Greek roots to name their product, and that is where the Thermo was officially born.

After this beginning, Gustav R. Paalen, a Viennese inventor and merchant from the beginning of the 20th century, improved the design on his own, patented them, and also marketed them, but taking his products to both sides of the Atlantic, thus its internationalization began. After this, during the great wars of the 20th century, the times between wars, and domestic use, the thermos became part of common objects in many places. And the essential of its design is still preserved.

Well, as you see, from a laboratory tool, to reaching our kitchens or outdoor excursion tents, the Thermos has come a long and interesting path. I say goodbye now, wishing you that you are well and that we can read again another time.
