It's Friday, and the work week is over. Although in my case, I work from home most of the time, so that doesn't really make much of a difference. Still, I'm still used to working from when I had a face-to-face job with a Monday to Friday schedule. Today was a day with a bit of a stuffy weather, with light and scattered rain, and some service interruptions. But, in general, it was a quiet day.

I haven't done much today, I just worked on something that a friend sent me on another network, and I've checked a few things that I like, and that I hadn't checked for a while. You could say that it was a relaxed day, although that has the drawback that 'A stopped ship doesn't earn freight'. That's an old phrase in my country to indicate that, if there is no work, then there is no income from payments for work.

The good thing is that I have a balanced budget for the rest of the month, but I always like to have a surplus. It is because of that old rule of planning and administration that one should never stick to the 'minimum critical deadline' of a plan or job. One must always consider that something can go wrong, and one must try to have some surplus resources to face contingencies.

Anyway, I am making my prologue very long, and there is nothing new to say. I prefer to start commenting on an event today that a friend told me about. It is Sausage Pizza Day.

This #food event has a North American origin, although I was a little surprised, because I expected it to have a directly Italian origin. My friend currently lives in the United States and told me that where he is it is a National Day. Although Pizza is an emblematic dish of popular Italian cuisine, it happens that with its adoption in other latitudes variations have occurred that demand their own celebration.

Among these cases, we have things like the controversial creation of a Canadian pizza maker, when he added slices of pineapple in syrup to a recipe and created the Hawaiian Pizza. But that #Pizza unleashes many passions, so let's go back to the Pizza that is celebrated today.

I was told that pizza came to America with the hard-working immigrants from Italy who were looking for an opportunity for a new life. In the specific case of the migration of Italians to North American territory, which increased at the end of the 19th century, one of the things that traveled with them were their recipes and traditions.

Among the recipes of Italian gastronomy, pizza had the advantage of being a relatively simple meal to make, somewhat inexpensive (if the ingredients were adjusted), and was part of the memories shared by the different groups of Italians. It must be remembered that Italy as a country was consolidated much later than its other European neighbors. So having things that allow them to identify with each other and achieve a sense of unity are very important.

I chose to comment on this anniversary for two reasons. The first (and obvious) reason is that I like to eat pizza. And this sausage pizza recipe was born from the desire to eat a familiar dish, but replacing an ingredient of animal protein with slices of a cheap and easy-to-obtain #sausage (it is common for the migrant population to be short of money almost always). And the second is that it made me feel in part what happens to my own people who have emigrated from Venezuela in recent years.

Very recently we had the largest number of emigrants leaving our country (in a relatively short time). That led to a dish as traditional as the Arepa becoming known in very different localities on various continents. Many compatriots brought their gastronomic customs with them and try to keep alive what reminds them of their homeland. I suppose that the Italian community, more than a century ago, went through the same process.

Well, this may make me a little nostalgic, and that is not the idea. So I better say goodbye and go eat (personal smile). Thank goodness I am thin, and I actually eat small portions, because if I were not, I would have problems for having such a 'good tooth'.

Es viernes, y termina la semana laboral. Aunque en mi caso trabajo desde casa casi todo el tiempo, así que eso en realidad no marca mucha diferencia. Aun así, me queda la costumbre de cuando tenía un trabajo presencial con horario de lunes a viernes. Hoy ha sido un día de clima un poco cargado, con lluvias ligeras y dispersas, y algunas interrupciones de servicios. Pero, en general, ha sido un día tranquilo.

He hecho poco hoy, apenas trabajé en una cosa que me mandó un amigo en otra red, y he revisado un poco algunas cosas que me gustan, y que tenía tiempo sin revisar. Se puede decir que fue un día relajado, aunque eso tiene el contratiempo de que ‘Barco parado no gana flete’. Esa es una vieja frase en mi país para señalar que, si no hay ocupación laboral, entonces no hay ingreso de pagos por el trabajo.

Lo bueno es que tengo balanceado el presupuesto del resto del mes, pero siempre me gusta tener un excedente. Es por esa vieja regla de planificación y administración de que uno nunca debe asirse al ‘plazo mínimo crítico’ de un plan o trabajo, siempre hay que considerar que algo puede salir mal y hay que procurar tener algunos recursos excedentes para afrontar contingencias.

Como sea, estoy haciendo mi prólogo muy largo, y no hay nada nuevo que decir. Prefiero comenzar a comentar sobre una efeméride de hoy que me comentó un amigo. Es el Día de la Pizza de Salchichas.

Esta efeméride de #comida tiene un origen norteamericano, aunque me sorprendí un poco, porque yo esperaba que tuviera un origen directamente italiano. Mi amigo vive actualmente en Estados Unidos y me dijo que en donde está es un Día Nacional. Si bien la Pizza es un plato emblemático de la cocina popular italiana, sucede que con su adopción en otras latitudes se han producido variaciones que reclaman su propia celebración.

Entre estos casos tenemos cosas como la controvertida creación de un pizzero canadiense, cuando le agregó rodajas de piña en almíbar a una receta y creo la Pizza Hawaiana. Pero esa #Pizza desata muchas paciones, así que mejor volvamos a la Pizza de que se celebra hoy.

Me comentaban que la pizza llegó a América con los inmigrantes trabajadores de Italia que buscaban una oportunidad para una nueva vida. En el caso específico de la migración a territorio norteamericano de italianos, que se incrementó a finales del siglo XIX, una de las cosas que viajó con ellos fueron sus recetas y tradiciones.

Entre las recetas de la gastronomía italiana, la pizza contaba con la ventaja de ser una comida relativamente sencilla de hacer, un tanto económica (si se ajustaban los ingredientes), y era parte de los recuerdos compartidos por los distintos grupos de italianos. Hay que recordar que Italia como país es de consolidación mucho más tardía que sus otros vecinos europeos. Así que tener cosas que les permitiera identificarse entre sí y lograr un sentido de unidad, son muy importantes.

Escogí comentar sobre esta efeméride por dos cosas. La primera (y obvia) razón es que me gusta comer pizza. Y esta receta de pizza de salchichas nación del deseo de comer un platillo familiar, pero sustituyendo un ingrediente de proteína animal con rodajas de un embutido barato y fácil de obtener (es común que la población migrante esté corta de dinero casi siempre). Y lo segundo, es que hizo sentir en parte lo que sucede con mi propia gente que ha emigrado de Venezuela en años recientes.

Hace muy poco tiempo tuvimos la mayor cantidad de emigrantes saliendo de nuestro país (en un tiempo relativamente corto). Eso llevó a que un plato tan tradicional como la Arepa, llegara a ser conocida en muy distintas localidades de diversos continentes. Muchos compatriotas llevaron consigo sus costumbres gastronómicas y tratan de mantener vivo aquello que les hace recordar su tierra natal. Supongo que la comunidad italiana, de hace más de un siglo atrás, pasó por el mismo proceso.

Bueno, esto me puede poner un poco nostálgico y no es la idea. Así que mejor me despido, y voy a comer (sonrisa personal). Menos mal que soy de contextura delgada, y en realidad como porciones pequeñas, porque si no fuera así, se me presentarían problemas por tener tan ‘buen diente’.

Te deseo que tú estés bien, que comas cosas que te gusten, y que nos podamos leer de nuevo en otra oportunidad.

Sí, aunque su preparación tradicional tiene algunas cosas que requieren bastante práctica, como el manejo de la masa en el aire, en realidad se puede cocer pizza sin esos pasos.

Admito que hay algo que se pierde al no hacerlo de la manera tradicional, pero es suficientemente bueno hacerlo de la manera simplificada para que sea una comida popular en muchos países.

Blood sugar units

It's important to remember that blood sugar can be measured in two units: mmol/L and mg/dl. Many diabetic patients have a glucometer at home, which displays one of these units. This can confuse patients who are unfamiliar with the other unit when they see the result. It's important to note that both units are correct, and they simply represent the measurement in different ways.

Converting between the two units is fairly simple using the following formulas: mmol/L × 18 = mg/dl and mg/dl ÷ 18 = mmol/L. For example, if a blood sugar reading is 5 mmol/L, it can be converted to 90 mg/dl (5 × 18). Conversely, if the blood sugar level is 150 mg/dl, it can be converted to 8.3 mmol/L (150 ÷ 18).
