International Strawberry Day + Día Internacional de la Fresa [Eng+Spa]

Hello, my day, Tuesday (February 27), was a bit dull. The weather was quite cold, for a tropical country, and it was almost the beginning of March. I suppose it could be part of some great climate cycle, or an effect of the disorder that Climate Change brings, I really don't know. My #life is usually calm, but with today's weather, I'm a little unwell, so I apologize if the day's log is too short.

Better, let's move on from personal matters to the anniversary of #History that I chose for today. It is a celebration within the field of #food, as a particular #vegetable product is praised, which has a couple of interesting details that I learned today. It's 'International Strawberry Day'.

Hola, mi día martes (27 de febrero), transcurrió un poco apagado. El clima estaba bastante frío, para ser un país tropical y estar casi por comenzar marzo. Supongo que podría ser parte de algún gran ciclo climático, o un efecto del desorden que trae el Cambio Climático, en verdad no lo sé. Mi #vida suele ser tranquila, pero con el clima de hoy, tengo un poco de malestar, así que me disculpo si el registro del día resulta muy breve.

Mejor pasemos de los asuntos personales a la efeméride de la #Historia que escogí para hoy. Es una celebración dentro del campo de la #comida, pues se enaltece un particular producto #vegetal, que tiene un par de detalles interesantes que aprendí hoy. Es el ‘Día Internacional de la Fresa’.

At first, it seemed strange to me, because I thought I had seen this celebration on the January calendar, so I checked, and I found that there are several days of the year that claim to be Strawberry Day. This disparity in dates for the #strawberry celebration caught my attention, but it seems that it is a standardization problem. I mean that it has not been possible to unify the criteria for the celebration, with the support of an authority recognized by the majority of the parties.

So this bush #fruit has at least three celebration dates, which are: today, January 21, and May 20. That was an interesting detail that I didn't know.

However, what caught my attention the most about the details of this fruit was that I have always called it 'strawberry', simply. But, I found that it has other names that may become more widely accepted in other parts of the world, such as: Fragaria, Fresa, Frutilla, fresón, or fresibaya.

In addition to the name issue, it turns out that the strawberry that I have known all my life is not as old as I would have thought. The wild origin of this creeping plant, which is a relative of rose bushes, is in Europe. But during the 18th century, 2 American specimens were crossed: Fragaria chiloensis and Fragaria virginiana. Seeking to replicate the large size of the first species and the high sweetness of the second mentioned species. This crossing gave birth to Fragaria × ananassa, which is the strawberry variety that dominates today, and is the most cultivated worldwide.

Al inicio, me pareció extraño, pues creí haber visto esta celebración en el calendario de enero, así que revisé, y encontré que hay varios días del año que reclaman ser el Día de la Fresa. Esta disparidad de fechas para la celebración de la #fresa, me llamó la atención, pero parece que se trata de un problema de estandarización. Me refiero a que no se ha logrado unificar el criterio de la celebración, con el apoyo de una autoridad reconocida por la mayoría de las partes.

Así que esta #fruta de arbusto tiene por lo menos tres fechas de celebración, que son: el día de hoy, el 21 de enero, y el 20 de mayo. Eso fue un detalle interesante que yo no sabía.

Sin embargo, lo que más me llamó la atención de los detalles de este fruto, fue que yo siempre la he llamado ‘fresa’, simplemente. Pero, me encontré que tiene otros nombres que pueden llegar a ser de mayor acepción en otras partes del mundo, tales como: Fragaria, frutilla, fresón, o fresibaya.

Además de la cuestión del nombre, resulta que la fresa que yo he conocido toda mi vida, no es tan vieja como yo habría pensado. El origen silvestre de esta planta rastrera, que es pariente de los rosales, está en Europa. Pero durante el Siglo XVIII, se cruzaron 2 especímenes americanos: Fragaria chiloensis y Fragaria virginiana. Buscando replicar el gran tamaño de la primera especie y la alta dulzura de la segunda especie mencionada. Este cruce dio nacimiento a la Fragaria × ananassa, que es la variedad de fresa que domina hoy en día, y es la más cultivada a escala mundial.

And, by the way, although the origin of this modern variety is American, I was surprised to see in a table of producers that the one who heads the world production list of #Fragaria is China. Well, after thinking about its territorial extension, its available labor force, and other points, it seemed to me in the end that it was reasonable.

I know that the manipulation of species for human consumption dates back many centuries, but I didn't know about this particular case. I like strawberries, and I'm lucky enough to not be allergic to them. But I do not know much. I remember that they told me that they were sweet fruits, and rich in vitamin C, that they had the least amount of Calories, and that made them good for certain calorie restriction diets. But I was not worried about that, since I am of a constitution thin since I was young.

Y, por cierto, aunque el origen de esta variedad moderna es americana, me sorprendí al ver en una tabla de productores que quien encabeza la lista de producción mundial de #Fragaria es China. Bien, luego de pensar en su extensión territorial, su mano de obra disponible, y otros puntos, me pareció al final que era razonable.

Sé que la manipulación de especies para el consumo humano es cosa de hace muchos siglos, pero no sabía de este caso en particular. Me gustan las fresas, y tengo la suerte de no ser alérgico a ellas. Pero no sé mucho. Recuerdo que me dijeron que eran de los frutos dulces, y ricos en vitamina C, que tenían la menor cantidad de Calorías, y eso los hacía buenos para ciertas dietas de restricción de calorías, pero a mí no me preocupaba eso, pues soy de constitución delgada desde que soy joven.
