5 AM Coffee and Michelin-star nerves

in We Are Alive Tribe19 hours ago

The day started early. Way too early. 5 AM, sitting in the kitchen, waiting for my son, coffee in hand, staring into the abyss like a mother who didn’t sleep a single second.

Today was a big day, his first shift in a Michelin-star restaurant. The kind of opportunity that makes you equal parts excited and absolutely terrified. And since we clearly share DNA, neither of us got much rest. He was probably running through recipes in his head, and I was mentally crafting the perfect mix of encouragement and don’t stress, you’ve got this energy.

When he finally walked into the kitchen, looking half-awake but fully determined, I kept it simple. No dramatic speeches, no last-minute advice, just a hug, a smile, and the absolute belief that he was going to kill it in that kitchen. Then, he was off, stepping into the world of fine dining, where chefs move faster than my thoughts before caffeine.

And me? I took a sip of my now slightly cold coffee, grabbed my phone, and opened Ecency.

That’s when I was hit with a wave of warmth and hilarity. So many replies! People connecting, chatting, throwing jokes, and one of them even calling me Silly Goose. Which, by the way, I love as a nickname. There’s something about it that just fits—probably the part where I wake up at 5 AM just to stare at my son and overthink soup recipes.

The conversations were funny, sweet, and just the right amount of chaotic, and honestly, it was the perfect way to start the morning. Feeling all warm and connected like I always do on Ecency, I turned my attention to the one thing I thought would be my productive moment of the day: cleaning the floor.

Now, I’m not saying the tiles were that dirty, but let’s just say I had high expectations. Maybe it was the sleep deprivation, maybe it was my sudden desire to actually see sunlight reflect off them, but I went all in. And two hours later, my knees had officially retired from existence, my back was filing a complaint, and the cat was looking at me with the deepest disapproval imaginable. Apparently, my cleaning methods were not up to feline standards.

Defeated by my own ambition, I did the only logical thing left, made soup. Because when in doubt, cook something comforting and pretend the floor situation never happened.

After some much-needed relaxation (which mostly consisted of scrolling through more Ecency replies and enjoying the little community moments), I got some really nice news, but that’s for another post. Suspense! Intrigue! Foreshadowing!

And then came the long, excruciating wait for my son to get home. Every minute felt like an hour, and @borniet arrived first, which meant we now had two nervous parents pacing around the house. At this point, I was considering installing a tracking device on my child (for safety reasons, of course).

Finally, he walked in. And the verdict?

It was amazing. He had such a great time that his brain couldn’t even process what he had actually cooked. Apparently, it was that busy. But that’s how you know it was a good shift, when the adrenaline is so high that memory just says, Nope, not today. To bad he had to make an assignment about what he did today.

So that was the day. Exhaustion, excitement, overwhelming support, weird cleaning habits, a cat who remains unimpressed, and one very happy, very tired chef-in-the-making.

Tomorrow, I hope for a little more peace and, maybe, just maybe, some actual sun. But until then, I’ll take this moment, the warmth of community here on Ecency, and the feeling of being a ridiculously proud, slightly silly goose of a mom.
