Yes, the path to wisdom is painful. The easier the road, the more wisdom is passed up. Talk to people who have had difficult lives and learn wisdom, even if foolish decisions landed them where they are. Listen carefully and learn from their experiences... not just "don't do what they did" but understand why they did what they did. Paul the Apostle said "The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God - if anyone thinks himself wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise."
