Benefits & Drawbacks Of A Four-Day Work Week

in Hive Learnerslast month

I'm a living testimony of what it would mean to have a four-day work week and that is because I got lucky to serve my country in a state that declared Mondays as public rest day. I can't say I'm unlucky as I always believe things happen according to God's plan but I never liked the idea of resting at home on a Monday which is the opposite of what is happening in many other states (most busiest day).

Well they say, when you are in Rome, behave like the Romans, so I've been living and working with a four-day work week. The experience has been nothing short of strange, unfamiliar and somewhat fun.

It's actually shorter than a four-day work week but it's a perfect experience to share for any who haven't experienced a shorter days in the week work before. For me, I'll be prefer how the normal is today, five days work with shorter hours in work actions. But from my experience working on a four-day work week, there are benefits and there are drawbacks to this experience.

I do work in a school as a teacher and the first benefit I acknowledge and appreciate the shorter days work for is, relieving from the stress that comes with teaching especially when the students are proving hard to be taught. I also get to have time for my other side works, spend time on whatever is important to me and I get to stay at home and rest as much as I want.

There is also the benefit of preparing well enough for my next class with the students, to increase productivity but I think this is almost same as doing little by little when there is a longer week days work so this benefit is not so worth it. The major benefit is to have more time to plan for personal activities and if you're into more things that earn you money, you'll gain more benefits.

But the drawbacks are nothing to write home about, works are delayed or slowed down or rushed to meet up with time. As a teacher, I have to rush the students on their scheme to meet up with the set time for their exams. We do know not all students are bright enough to grasp everything so fast, they need more time to be taught.

There is also the drawback in meeting up demands and lots of distraction in the working sector. These drawbacks could be minimized but it is best we have the normal five days work week as it has been, there will surely be abuse of it if this new system is allowed.

From my experience in this kind of system, still experiencing it actually, I wouldn't want this to continue. So I can't wait to get back to working all Mondays to Fridays and feel excited about the weekends. I think we would lose the excitement about weekends if we have one more day added to the weekends for us or what do you think?

I absolutely agree with you. Saturdays and Sundays are not enough. Imagine going to class everyday, running around to submit assignments and projects, night classes, tests, and other activities, then having just 2 days to rest? Tsk tsk tsk.

Lol lazy Favour 😝

I think it could work, but this is because I have a different approach, more towards the part of completed objectives and not hours worked. People who have more time to dedicate themselves to what they like end up being more efficient and productive in whatever they do.

Regarding your work, I have been a computer science teacher for an entire school year, and I attest to all the enormous planning work that must be done to organize the classes, the exams and the topics to be discussed, here in this country (Venezuela) the teachers They must follow an established order in terms of the topics and knowledge delivered, then it is mandatory that we comply with those requirements because it is required by law. Normally teachers invest almost 50% of their time in planning their classes, and I think this is something that should be improved to have more time that will allow them to research and better prepare to teach.

That's interesting to know about teaching in your country, it's kinda same with my country.

You're really lucky to have such a schedule, having more time for yourself is very good. I imagine that with a reduced work schedule, there might be more hustle and bustle, but with more energy to work, the performance should also be better! Everything has its positives and negatives haha

Yeah, I guess I'm lucky
Thanks for stopping by

Hehehe, Merit the hard worker. I’m jumping on the 4 workings days bus any day.😂

🤣🤣🤣
Lemme o

When I first saw the question, I was all excited but then as I went further and saw the longer working hours, I had to advise myself and was like "It's a no" I prefer my normal working routine and how I prepare for the weekend.

Lol same here o

I love the last part of your write up. The enthusiasm we get when the weekend is coming won't be there anymore when we only have 4 working days. Also, works would be piled up making it more tasks to resume to.

Yeah, I thought so too
It's just best we stick to the normal 😅

Works are usually delayed at home especially for people who are lazy and some people tend to get rusty when they spend three days at home and four days at work so it is better to have it this way and just make sure we balance our weekend and our working days

Balance is all we need and we would appreciate the length of work days we have now.

I prefer my normal working hours there is this joy i always feel when weekend is approaching. If we have to work for four days i will not feel the vibe.

Haha same here o

Okay

In the working week, Monday shouldn't be scrapped. It starts as a strength to me, motivating me to finish the rest of the days. A 5-day working week is the sweetest, but if the system changes, we have to adjust too. If 4 days are declared, it is okay. Personally, I prefer 5 days because it's unique.

Yeah, we will have to adjust but I hope it doesn't get to that.

I also don't like the idea of resting at home on Monday, it's not necessary at all. Mondays are special , they justify the end of the week.
If any day should be removed, it should be Fridays because they are considered half-day in most cases.

Four days work permit on point 🤣

Haha I totally agree with that Fridays to be removed if a day must be removed 😅

👍👍👍
