Providing free water for the street

in Hive Learners15 hours ago

Hello everyone!

I'm someone who has not really been mingling with a lot of people due to the fact that I'm not the outgoing type. I don't work in the midst of a large crowd with many colleagues—in fact, I work in my own space. Because of this, I don't often get the opportunity that many people out there have to relate with a lot of others. However, even in my low-key lifestyle, I'm always available to lend a helping hand whenever I come across someone in need. Even if it's a stranger, even in situations where I'm not directly called upon for help, whenever I see that someone needs assistance and the help is within my capacity, I offer it freely.

Free Water

My street is such that there are not many boreholes (water sources) in residential compounds. The few available ones are situated in gated compounds, except for the one in my compound and another in a lounge close to my house. The one in my compound has become the main source of water for people on the street who don't have boreholes. Many times, we have complained about how they fetch and exhaust our water. We have tried several times to padlock the tap, but it never lasts long. We put a padlock, and within months, it gets damaged, and the uncontrollable fetching by street residents resumes.

The worst part is that public electricity is not always available to pump water. We often have to use a generator and costly fuel to pump it, and the generator belongs to me. Since I use the water frequently, I always find myself buying fuel and ensuring the water is pumped.

Honestly, I have gotten angry many times when I pump water at night, only to wake up and find that the tank has drastically reduced. But despite this, sometimes I still gladly pump the water and open it for everyone to fetch. I often do this as a way of rendering community service, hoping they will understand and bear with me on days when I pump and decide not to allow fetching. But you know, humans can be funny—the day you refuse to let them fetch, they quickly forget the days when you willingly pumped and allowed them to empty the tank. Lol.

Personal Services

I think the easiest place for me to render help is the church, where I offer personal services even when no one calls for my help. I can't say it's because I belong to a service group in church that makes me do it—no, it's just something I naturally do.

Many of my friends here already know that I belong to the ushering service group in my church, and our work is well-defined. There are tasks we don’t typically handle because of our workload. Yes, it's a big church, and sometimes we get exhausted from doing our basic duties, let alone extending our hands to assist other workers in areas outside our responsibility.

What do I mean?

Many times, I have helped to clean chairs that I noticed were dusty. Often, when members see me doing this as they are about to sit, they say, "No, no, no, let me clean it," but I insist on doing it. Normally, cleaning chairs is not part of our duty.

That's amazing. I'm sure many will benefit from this simple work. Great job.

Yeah, they're enjoying it even though I'm making it happen occasionally.

Omo people can make you vex sha when it comes to public stuff, I have experience such before too because our house has borehole outside.

Sometimes we that live in the house wouldn’t have water to use because people have fetch our water finish very early in the morning

This experience is always a crazy one. Imagine pumping water and beginning none occupants of the compound to let you use it😅

I can imagine the pain of having to wake up at night to pump water for others to use, it may not be convenient but it's a blessing for many.

No lies, I used to get angry a lot at the way they come up to use the water not considering the person that pumped it😅. But it's fine, it's a privilege to help people too.
