Greetings!
When the former president of Nigeria, President Buhari was in power, amidst many troubles, especially the hardship that emanated from his poor leadership, a conspiracy theory arose. This theory claimed that the president had been dead for a long time and that the person ruling Nigeria was actually a clone, a body double using a Sudanese man named Jubril.
When I heard about this, my mind immediately related it to one of my favorite TV series, The Legend of the Seeker, where Walter's body was used to replace Darken Rahl.
The rumors about President Buhari's death were widespread, and the so-called "evidence" was very compelling. I must give credit to those who created the conspiracy because they did an incredible job in capturing our imaginations and making many of us believe it was true. Yes, I was among the many that believed so.
This conspiracy theory gained traction during the period leading up to the election that would win him his second term as president of Nigeria. At that time, Buhari had been frequently flying to outside the country for medical treatment due to a serious illness. Prior to that, he had spent a full six months out of the country for treatment, which became the foundation of the conspiracy. News spread that he had died during his absence and that, in a bid to prevent Nigerians from knowing or allowing another candidate to win the election, they cloned him. According to the theory, they brought in Jubril, a Sudanese man who resembled Buhari, trained him well, dressed him like Buhari, and that’s where the whole drama began.
I won't lie, I was completely taken in by the conspiracy. I believed it and even wished I had superpowers so I could sneak into the presidential house and reveal the truth. Many comparisons were made, such as claiming that the original Buhari was left-handed while the current one was right-handed. Facial comparisons were also made, and noticeable differences were pointed out, suggesting that the current president was not the Buhari we once knew.
I'm not into politics, and I wasn’t then, but during that period, I was furious with the leadership of this country. I couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t come out and tell the truth about the situation. It was said that the first lady and other top politicians were deeply involved, and that they were doing all of this for their own personal gain—to loot the Nigerian economy for themselves and leave the nation in shambles before they were caught.
Do you know what the most interesting and funny part of this whole issue is?
To this day, we don’t know when exactly the conspiracy died out. All of a sudden, people stopped talking about it, and everything went back to normal, as if the nation had never been on fire over the issue. President Buhari, whether the real one or the clone, returned to his seat, and he was accepted without any further attempts to investigate the truth.
Well, those who masterminded the conspiracy certainly did a good job of getting the entire country talking. It felt like something out of a movie, the kind of thing you'd think could never happen in real life.
Thanks for reading.
