Earth and Us: Addressing Our Environmental Responsibilities

We live on Earth and in many ways, we depend on it. We call it Mother Earth, equating it with a mother. The reason is straightforward: Earth behaves toward us similarly to how a mother behaves toward her children. It gives us food, shelter, and much more. Globally, we call Earth the home to mankind. We always keep our home neat and clean, but we do not care for our home, Earth, in the same way. When we throw an empty packet of chips on the road, do we think about the harm it causes to the environment? Do we behave similarly when we are in our own home? We are turning Earth into a dumping ground. This is just one small example; there is an endless list of examples if we start counting.

The situation is alarming and it is getting worse every year. If you have noticed, the temperature is increasing every summer compared to the previous season. Scientists attribute pollution and global warming as the reasons for this. The seasons themselves are not behaving as they are supposed to. Here at my place, it's the summer season and in the last one and a half months, there have been hailstorms three times, which I have never seen in my life. Two days ago, it was raining, and the timing is very bad as it's the harvesting season. The crops are badly affected due to rain during the harvesting season. If I check the Air Quality Index (AQI) in my area, to be honest, I do not want to go out, but we cannot live caged inside our own homes. Some people blame the burning of agricultural waste as the reason for low AQI, but what about the pollution added by industries to air and water? We all are responsible for the dangers caused to the environment and Mother Earth. It's a failure of both the government and individuals that the level of pollution is increasing every day. The solution can only be implemented if we all join hands together and it should be a collective effort.

The use of renewable energy is very low compared to fossil fuels. According to one study done in 2020, fossil fuel consumption is approximately 80%, and only 20% comes from renewable energy sources globally. If we talk about India, here also the majority of use is of fossil fuels, and the percentage has increased to 90%, with only 10% coming from renewable energy sources. The main reason for not using renewable sources is the initial cost of setup, which could be reduced if the government shows interest and provides subsidized rates.

Every year on April 22nd, we celebrate Earth Day, but why only on a single day of the year? It should be a continuous process, and why not every month or every week? COVID-19 was a time when the whole world was still, and the pandemic caused disaster; many of us lost our loved ones. But the only positive thing about COVID-19 was the improvement in the environment. The AQI was at the best level in decades during the pandemic. It was the time when I finally saw the peaks of mountains during travel to my village. That was possible because of the clear air and weather.
