Hello all Hivians and good people of the Gems community. Most of us may not be aware of some major happenings or events around the globe that took place on this day many years ago. I will therefore take us round the globe in a giffey to have a look at some of those historical events that took place on this day, wednesday the 02/10/2024 in history.
We begin today from England. Do you know that on this day in 1836, the naturalist Charles Darwin arrived back in England following a five-year voyage aboard the HMS Beagle, during which he collected the specimens and observations that eventually formed the basis of his theory of evolution by natural selection.
From England, we move over to the United States of America. Do you also know that on this day in 1985, American actor Rock Hudson died, becoming one of the first Hollywood celebrities known to succumb to AIDS-related illnesses; the significant publicity surrounding his death attracted attention to the disease.
From the USA, we move over to Ethiopia. Now, on this day in 1935, Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie ordered mobilisation after discovering that Italian forces had crossed the border to start the Italo-Ethiopian War.
From Ethiopia, we move over to India. Do you know that on this day in 1869, Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer who led the Indian independence movement against British rule was born in Porbandar, India.
As a result, Mahatma Gandhi became known as the "father" of his country.
Gentlemen, we'll round off our today's look in history from France. Do you know that on this day in 1853, François Arago, a French physicist, who developed the principle of producing magnetism by rotating a nonmagnetic conductor died at n Paris, France.
