The crazy heat and humidity of the dog days of summer has hardly abated in Hiroshima this year, even though we are already half way through September. So what better way to chill out than to have a few cool beers at the Hiroshima Oktoberfest?!

Oktoberfest? In September? In Hiroshima?

Why not?!

I took along a chess set or two and met up with my old pal Crazy Shaun. We found ourselves a good perch at one of the trestle tables under an awning, but it was still baking hot all afternoon, and almost unbearably so in the late afternoon as the sun sank without losing any of its power.

I selected an Arcobräu lager because (1) the Arcobräu kiosk was close to where we were sitting, (2) there was no queue, and (3) I wanted a big glass with an 'andle. I don't know why Crazy Shaun chose an Ayinger, but he seemed quite happy with his choice.

As for the chess, the first few games all went my way. Those games were played without a clock and I know that my opponent favours a somewhat hasty attacking style that I was able to outfox. Later on we got out the clock and results were somewhat more varied.

In all, it was a fine, if sweltering, way to spend a Sunday afternoon and evening in the late summer in Hiroshima.

Cheers!
