Speaking in tongues is a gift, and if you desire that gift, God will give it to you, because He said in His Word that gifts that you desire, He will give to you.
But speaking in tongues is not the only evidence of having the Holy Spirit. Just like you have the gift of prophecy, the gift of healing, the gift of dreams and interpretation of dreams and visions, speaking in tongues is a gift.
Not everyone will have the gift to speak in tongues, just like many will not have the gift of healing, of interpreting dreams and visions, of prophecy. But because you don't speak in tongues, that don't mean that you don't have the Holy Spirit.
Many people believe that because they don't have the gift to speak in tongues, that the Lord is not with them. And many people have gotten discouraged in their walk and even left God because of this.
Speaking in tongues is a gift, but it is not the only evidence of having the Holy Spirit.
