The courtyard of the Lions is one of the best known places of the Alhambra Granada. Being the origin of its name, the twelve lions that are the source of the fountain that occupies the center of the courtyard, lions on which rests the great cup and that surround it.
Built by Mohamed V, its plan is rectangular, and is surrounded by a gallery as a cloister supported by 124 columns of white marble, resulting in a beauty and artistic richness that is impressive.
The elegant temples that overlook the courtyard are also extraordinary. They are covered with lace domes and it can be seen that the decoration is a great resource to transform the architecture of the place.
The Fountain of the Lions, both in its operation and in its symbolism, represents a spring, and is a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering of the time, because the volume of water coming out of the jets is equal to the volume of water that is carried back to the front cup so that there is never overflow of the fountain and providing a perceptible tightness of the water when it is actually in motion.
It is undoubtedly the most beautiful palace and courtyard of the Alhambra, but there are others that are very nice and I hope to share with you soon.
Regards.
