Star Wars: Empire At War

It has been so long since the last time I played this game. I haven't played the campaign of it, for me, it's the instant action matches that I like.

Space Combat

The space battles are so much fun, and with the the expansion you can play as the Empire, Rebels, or the Consortium (who are essentially bounty hunters, pirates and criminals in general.

Having the three different factions is really cool, but the only problem is that you can't do any 1v1v1 matches, which I think would be a bit of fun.

There are mods available for the game though, and I'm sure there would be some out there that would allow those types of matches.

My favourite type of battle in the game are the space battles, because I think they're a bit better than the normal ground battles.

I love the combat between the different ships, there are also some really cool details, like when you destroy an enemy cruiser, it sometimes breaks into a few large chunks and floats below the battle. There it remains as a tombstone, while the war commences above.

It's just a cool detail that I like.

Ground Combat

Being able to command iconic vehicles, troops and even heroes is a really cool feature of this game. I don't know why it never really grabbed me before.

I'll try and give it another go and see if I can get into it, but as of yet, I have never really had much of a draw toward it.

I used to play a game called Star Wars Force Commander back in the day, and I loved that one and played it to death. There were so many good maps, and in general it was so much fun.

This would pretty much be an upgrade to that game, so I really should try and give it a chance.

I'm doing some matches and recording them too because I want to use some of the gameplay footage in my videos I'm doing. I figured some space footage might go down well, and that's the thing that threw me back into this game.

I'm trying to think of some other games similar to it, but I'm drawing a bit of a blank so far. I suppose maybe Kerbal Space Program, or Space Engineers would be good ones too.

Empire at War is SUCH a fun game. I play it every year or two, crushing out some rounds of Galactic Conquest... It's such a shame they didn't develop more like this, because they definitely hit on a fantastic RTS game when developing this.
