Happy Wednesday everyone! Hump day has finally arrived! It's turning out to be a rather nice day here, and should be a nice sunny afternoon. Speaking of sunshine it's the silver round of the day. A 1981 Sunshine Mining round with the beautiful bald eagle. One of my favorite silver rounds for sure.
About the round:
From numista.com
These were such beautiful rounds that they produced over the years. I love to pick them up when I find a good deal. The bald eagle design is so detailed, and the sun behind it is beautiful! It's really too bad they are no longer produced! These are great silver rounds for stackers and collectors alike.
I've always loved seeing bald eagles, such iconic north American predators and very graceful in flight! It's hard to believe not that long ago they were endangered species from DDT use but have bounced back nicely. @melinda010100 mentioned recently that they often perch in trees behind her house to fish in the adjacent river. Isn't she lucky?

A bald eagle in flight
The Sunshine Mine was located in northern Idaho and was one of the biggest silver producing mines in the world. It opened in 1890 and was in operation intermittently until 2001 when weak silver prices forced them to shut down. In the 1970's it was part of the Hunt brothers plan of cornering the silver market, this caused silver prices to jump to over $50 and ounce in 1980. It also saw it's share of tragedy when 91 men died of carbon monoxide poisoning in the mine when a gas leak occurred. Mining is an inherently dangerous job for the miners and they sure have a very tough job...
And if you wondered what happened to the Hunt brothers, the US government Commodities Future Trading Commission changed their margins rules. The result was the Hunt's being over leveraged and margin calls forced them into bankruptcy. Not a pretty end to their ten year scheme to corner the silver markets.
If you ever have the chance to pick up one of these beautiful rounds at a good price take advantage. They are becoming harder and harder to find especially in good condition. A beautiful ounce of silver!
I hope you enjoyed my post today, I appreciate you stopping by to have a peak. If you have any suggestions, questions, or comments please feel free to leave them below. Have a great day and keep of stacking!
