The Importance of A Support Unit - Merdaali Guardian Case

in FreeCompliments11 days ago

Greetings Fellow Splinterlands Players

I hope you are having a good day. In this post I would like to share a battle which I hope it could help new players to understand how important a support unit in your line up. In several cases, we do not need any support units, we can just GANG HO and kill our opponent first before they can retaliate.

However in general there are reason why a support is always needed, and in this post I will use Merdaali Guardian as the reference,

This card is a great support for me, because she can heal health point and repair armor. She doesn't have cleanse, but hey... we can't have everything in one card anyway. The main weakness in this card is that she doesn't have any attack. In some case, the absence of attack can be fatal, because it will make you lose your momentum, making your opponent having a chance to breath first.

We will see below how this card can change the tide of a battle. Without further a do, lets check our battle here...

HIGHLIGHTED BATTLE

I think this is a battle that suit my purpose well. In general my team level and their level did not differ much, however they were stronger due to Possibilus The Wise and their Coastal Sentry. Our line up is a bit similar, the difference was they relied on debuff and my team would rely on Merdaali Guardian to support my tanks.

Let see how this go

  • The battle started with both side buffing and debuffing both parties. They had Kulu Mastermind who was one of the strongest water element unit. My team did not have many buff, only a protect which gave +2 armor to all.
  • They came with 17 melee damage and 2 magic damage, combined all it became 19 damage per round.
  • My team had 15 melee damage, and 2 magic damage, so our team had a total 17 damage per round.
  • Their team had that trumple abilities from Possibilus The Wise, so this would be a hard battle for me. I could only rely on +1 speed from Keyla Frendul.

  • The first round was too intense, we managed to take down both tanks. It's the end for Djinn Oshannus.

  • The second round my team started to fall behind. It's due to Trample ability from Possibilus The Wise. At this point, round 3 started with 5 vs 4 condition, we had a unit down there.
  • However in this round my team started to come back. It seemed Merdaali Guardian linked well to Commander Slade.

  • Round 4 started with an equal condition, 4 vs 4. The combination between Commander Slade and Merdaali Guardian was tough enough to withstand opponent attacks.
  • However in this round, Commander Slade fell down.

  • It's 3 vs 3 at this point. Both of us had lost our strongest tanks. They were attacking with 12 melee damage and my team could only deliver 9 melee damage, luckly Merdaali Guardian could negate that gap with her heals and repairs.

  • For the first time in this battle, my team managed to get a come back here. We were leading 3 vs 2 now, at this point Merdaali Guardian proved her supports could turn the table upside down, from losing to leading.

  • The battle was still intense, because of Havling ability from Arkemis the Bear, our damage power was reduced. This led to longer rounds.

  • Round 8 started with 1 vs 3. At this point my team had sealed our victory. The halved Coastal Sentry could not kill my arkemis the bear, so it's locked there.

  • Finally round 9 was the last one. Good Game

Closure

I will make this simple, in general having Merdaali Guardian would make you lose some momentum. You could see in the first 3 rounds my team was heavily underfire. We were losing however due to our good fire power, they lost some units too which eventually when Merdaali Guardian could fight reducing the damage her team had been taken. So on this condition we could learn that:

IF THE ATTACK IS TOO MASSIVE, SUPPORT BECOMES USELESS

Yes that's the most important one. If you do not wish to defend with some support, make sure you hit as hard as you can get, develop some plans to get a ridiculous huge damage.

If you see, the battle flow started to reverse not only because some of their heavy hitters got killed. It became even when Commander Slade came forward as the main tank. Later on When Arkemis The Bear was in front, my opponent were struggling and unable to knock him out. So this led to our second conclusion

HEAL AND REPAIR CAN BE GOOD IF YOUR UNIT IS GREAT

It is not effective trying to heal someone who easily get wipe out in one go. Support only enhance your defense, how long it will last or how formidable it will be, all depend on the initial condition which is how sturdy is your main tank.

Sometime we want to defend badly by getting some support units who are excel at healing, repairing and buffing, but we forget that our team does not have a strong tank, whether at the frontline or in the backline.

In this battle, I believe Merdaali Guardian is the one that comes out as the MVP. She doesn't kill any target but she managed to prolong Commander Slade and helped Arkemis The Bear to last till the end of the battle.
