Christmas is a special time of the year for me. I truly feel like it's my favourite holiday of the year. This is not just because of it's spiritual significance but also due to the many arrangements organized by familied to make it memorable. The value and importance of Christmas were instilled in me from birth. My parents made Christmas celebration a big deal, I mean a very big deal.
Preparations usually begin at about two months to Christmas, all the gears would already be set in place by my mum. Clothes, shoes, jewelry and other accessories that would be needed to make us look good and attractive would already be set. All that would needed was for the d-day to arrive.
When the d-day finally comes around, my siblings and I would be overwhelmed with so much joy. We would be so ecstatic that we won't be able to keep still even at church. All we wanted was an opportunity to flaunt our accessories and show off the new devices we got to our friends.
Another beautiful memory that I have of Christmas is family time. Due to everyone's busy schedules in trying to make ends meet, the members of my family often get absorbed in their work life that there's hardly time to come together and catch up but Christmas affords my family the opportunity to rest from work, meet and catch up. I get to meet my uncles, aunts and cousins at Christmas time. Of course, these meetings meant lots and lots of gifts awaitef us kids
Also at Christmas time, my family organizes a feast for the children and neighbours irrespective of religion, tribe, status and ethnicity. As the eldest daughter of my family, I had the privilege of taking the meals personally to the doorstep of each neighbour. My reward was their heartfelt smiles and good wishes. The merry making continued with us kids eating from a very large tray together. We laughed and joked around even as we try to outdo the other in scooping spoonfuls of rice. These moments kept us close and happy all through our chilfhood days. We longingly looked forward to this season every year.
These memories and more summed up what made and still makes Christmas really special for me. Memories are worth keeping especially happy ones such as these.
While we might not have had visits by Santa, we kids back then didn't mind at all as we looked for ways to improvise and catch fun.
Times may have passed and things changed but the joy neither changes nor ceases. It somehow becomes contagious like a communicable disease. This has been a peak into my merry memories of Christmas.
