Tip for beginners: The importance of concentrated fire and decoys

Good morning and welcome to another Splinterlands-Battle-Analysis. This time it's directed towards the newcomers, as part of the Community engagement challenge.

We have Silver League Wild Tournament here, so most of the cards don't apply to newcomers, but the strategy does. It's 16 Mana, no magic, and commons and rare only.

I went for the Sea Monster for its high damage, decent speed, high health and healing. Second was the Merdhampir, a card with life leech and cripple - meaning, even if hitting armor, it lowers the health of the opponent and gains 1 health. Then I placed the chicken in the rear as a decoy - with extra shield thanks to Kelya, my summoner.

The enemy had a nice line-up, too. The failed summoner is a great and cheap tank with reflect. Then an opportunity monster, two sniper with 2 ranged damage, and a shield breaker ranged monste, plus a decoy at the end.

This setup would've been good against an enemy with opportunity or sneak melee, since the summoner gives everyone thorns, making it hard for melee to survive their own attacks - they get 2 damage each time they attack, which you can observe with my Sea Monster.

Now, I concentrated my fire on their first monster, while theirs was spread between all of my three monsters. That was the little difference that made me win the game. In the first round, the Summoner survived with only 1 health while the Meerdhampir still har 3, thanks to leech. My chicken was still alive, too, only lost its armor to the Battering Ram.

The Merdhampir killed the summoner in the second round, getting one more health - but was killed by the Centaur. But it was too late. The battering ram was killed directly by the Sea Monster, and the Centaur was in first position, unable to attack. And the chicken was still alive, surprisingly resilient.

Round 3 made the last moves towards check mate. Even though the chicken was finally plugged, the Sea Monster - after healing from thorns - took out the centaur, and the opponent didn't have enough damage on the field to counter the healing.

So, what to do differently? For example, instead of the battering ram and the dartling, use another snipe monster - that would've taken out the Merdhampir quicker, then the chicken, and maybe left enough attack power to get the Sea Monster. Or use a front-focussed attack with a reach monster and "normal" ranged attacks. With the support of thorns, the Sea Monster would've gone down quickly, leaving the Merdhampir defenseless.

But in the end, you never know what's coming. So, I personally focus on one attack field. Either all on first position, or sneak (2-3 monsters), or snipe, or opportunity - but I try to never mix them up.
