Not sure in what context you meant that, but it can be understood in both ways and both can be true... If you reveal a faker or a hypocrite, and he is a whale, it could backlash on you, but in the long run, I suppose others would stay on the side of the truth...

And the other way if you are tricked by a fake person and lured to work with it, that could cause a lot of harm as people would connect bad things with you, even if you didn't know...
