Hello Movie fans!
This is my entry into the CineTV contest 91, Favorite Christmas Movie. The link is here.
Name - Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Released - 2023
Director - James Mangold
This week's contest about your favorite christmas movie and at christmas time people are usually watching some of the classic films like Home Alone or Back to the Future. Among those classics for me would be to watch some Indiana Jones movies.
Who can beat some classic Indy searching for the lost ark and the memorable scene when they open it. There is also the Last Crusade with the brilliant Sean Connery who really made that film as Indy's Dad.
However, this year on Disney they have the newest version of Indy made this year called the Dial of Destiny, so I thought I would give it a watch instead and give my review.
The film starts off with our favorite action hero Indy deep behind enemy lines searching for stolen artifacts when he comes face to face with the films new foe Jürgen Voller played by the currently very popular Mads Mikkelsen who seems to be in everything at the moment!
The film has everything you would expect from an Indy film and pretty much rehashes all the old stunts from all the previous films. Indy with insects, Indy fighting on a train, Indy wrestling bad guys in a car chase, aeroplane and on and on it goes.
It is a classic cat and mouse game he plays getting caught by Jüegen, but escaping at the last minute. It does take some stretching of the imagination though as he is now 81 years old and does look it in the film. However, the film is a pure nostaligic easy watching flick for Indy fans and I guess this doesn't matter.
Similar to many of the other actors his age rehashing their major hits like Tom Cruise in Top Gun, Harrison dons the hat and whip for Indy once more. Unlike with Keanu Reeves who didn't want to make a rehash of The Matrix, Harrison seems more happy in the role though.
At times the film comes across as an old school reunion with many of your favorite Indy characters making an appearance like the awesome Sallah who still wears the same traditional egyptian hat from 30 years ago. I love the actor John Rhys-Davies who also starred in The Lord of the Rings. However, they don't really have any part of the storyline!
(spoiler alert)
The best part of the movie for me is the first train battle scene and it is the second half of the film (it is a long film) where they fly back in time and the fighting on the plane. You get to see some historical battle scenes as they fly around in planes with ancient battles taking place.
Overall it gave me that typical Christmas movie fayre where you could watch some of your favorite actors and do not think. Even Antonio Bandaras was in the movie.
Was it up to the standard of The Lost Ark? No, you can't beat the younger Harrison Ford, but it was still reasonably enjoyable.
Thanks for reading.
