There's this girl named Emmanuella; she's around 18 to 19 years old. She's the daughter of one of my clients, and her dad often sends her to meet me, either to drop off clothes or to pick up the ones I have worked on. She likes my company, so each time she comes, we crack jokes and laugh.
One day, I noticed that she was holding two phones. One was her usual Tecno Spark, while the other was an iPhone. I don't know much about iPhones, but I know they're expensive, especially the latest ones. The one she was holding was very neat and sparkling.
"See this girl! It seems you just cashed out. You've gotten an iPhone!" I exclaimed, teasing her.
"Shhhhh! Don't announce it now. Not everyone in my house knows about this," she shushed me.
"Hahahahah! Are you trying to tell me you didn't get this legally?" I asked, laughing.
"Heheheheheh! What do you mean by illegally?" she asked.
"It's either you've started doing Yahoo, you're involved in runs, you're now dating a Yahoo boy or you're now stealing. Of course, you can't escape all of these, or do you want to tell me that you bought this phone? From which work?"
"Abeg go! You people can think far," she tried to brush off the topic, but I kept pushing to find out how she got the phone.
"Well, it's my boyfriend that bought it for me," she finally admitted with a girlish pride.
"And the boyfriend must be a Yahoo guy," I teased, causing her to run away, tired of my interrogation.
I didn't judge her because that's the era we're currently in. The world is corrupt, and we can't help it. Things that were considered abominations in the good old days are now normal.
Two days after our conversation, I went to their house to deliver clothes. It was in the morning, and upon arrival, I encountered a heated argument. Emmanuella's dad had just discovered the iPhone and was not taking it lightly. He was shouting and beating her, trying to find out how she got the phone. Emmanuella boldly told him that her boyfriend bought it for her. The man couldn't believe that a boy her daughter is dating could buy such an expensive phone. He had gone online to check the price, which was around 900k, and he assumed his daughter must have stolen the phone.
At that moment, I didn't know whether to intervene or allow him to continue. After pondering for a while, I decided to intervene and asked the father to calm down. I suggested that since Emmanuella said her boyfriend bought it for her, he should try to get the boyfriend's number and talk to him.
"This girl? Do you know how many times I've asked her to give me the boy's number so I can call him, but she refuses? She must have stolen this phone!" the father said angrily with his voice hitting the roof.
At that point, I didn't know what to believe because with the kind of beating Emmanuella was receiving, she should have given her boyfriend's number or maybe she's scared that her dad might take action to arrest the boyfriend. Or perhaps she actually stole the phone or got it through other dirty means.
I just helped to calm the situation. I made sure the dad stopped beating her and suggested he keep the phone until Emmanuella was ready to cooperate and provide more information.
Thanks for reading.
