For more than a decade of my existence in the Southern Region of Nigeria, I have discovered that this place is an underrated kingdom full of potentials. Well, Nigeria is a blessed country on its own but I want to say that the Southerners have always been creative. Their craft and skill is next to none, a testament of the sheer brilliance in human creativity.
The southern region of the country is also a majorly known spot for carvings. They're skilled in wood carving. I have been privileged to see an old man turn a log of wood into an art piece, one which fascinates not just with it beauty but narrative; holding culture. The carvings made are so renowned and are useful for decorations. Furniture in most homes are many pieces of carefully carved wooden furniture designed to provide functional uses, they are also pleasing to the eyes. They are crafted to suit any space, these carvings blend with the modern or traditional home. In addition to that, there are exclusive carvings - carved exclusively for the culture and festive celebrations handcrafted by expert artisans. These objects are not mere ornamentation; they carry cultural value and history.
This shows how well she knows her carving instruments; Mallets, chisels and knives are tools of the trade in this art form. They have great abilities here to give new life back to damaged wood. What amazes me too is how they are able to envision something in a piece of raw wood and take it into an object is really inspiring. The carvings are always exceptional and are always relatable to the community historical events.
Wood selection is important here, as different woods impart their own characteristics such as grain pattern and color, not to mention density. These are taken into account individually to achieve the end goal whether it be a heavy lump of furniture or delicate decoration. The carvings are also made durable using preservations such as oiling and varnishing will protect them from rotting. With these methods passed on through generations, it is easy to see that they hope their carvings can be appreciated for many years.
Engaging with these wooden creations, it is helpful because they promote rest, imagination and individuality. Carving itself is defined by art and meditation which makes the artist to go deeper in their work. Furthermore, the carvings make money for the community as they are sold in many urban areas around. This business not only supports them financially but also spreads their culture and artistic works beyond this region.
Wooden carvings from the South Region of Nigeria are proof of human imagination and skills. They connect us to our environment’s resources, they inspire and beautify our lives, making them invaluable! These works of art are not mere items; rather, they are an affirmation of existence, identity, and the amazing dexterity of man’s hand. They prompt us to preserve our cultural heritage and unearth beauty in everyday objects that can be regarded as creative pieces when seen through the eyes of craftmanship talent.
