When Sharon was relocating to Abuja, she did not know what to expect, but every time we talk about her relocation, I will always say to her in confidence that Abuja will favour you and relocating to Abuja will be one of the best life decisions you ever made.
Her first attempt to securing a house in Abuja, she got scammed and lost a Hundred thousand naira in the process. The agent refused to give her the One hundred thousand Naira claiming it's his agent fee.
I asked Sharon, why would you be in Delta state and paying for an apartment in abuja you haven't even seen? She responded babe I tire for myself. Like me, Sharon has this perk of trusting people.
After all failed, she eventually falls back to her sister who resides in Abuja and in few weeks another apartment was secured, maintenance was done and she moved in.
On getting to Abuja life started, Sharon had used all her life savings to relocate that she barely had enough to feed. There were days her gas would finish and she only had water. There were days gas go dey but food dun finish. She would text me and ask with a little doubt, you sure say I never make mistake? I will respond to her in confidence again, you never make mistake na so the beginning of every journey dey be, hang in there.
She kept hanging, she kept applying for jobs, she would go for interview and afterwards they will tell her you are not what we are looking for. She will tell me and I'd tell her hang in there that is not your job, your job dey come. Some days we'd talk about how challenging life has been, the rigours and hassles of being a woman seeking for a job. I will always tell her that the last thing I'd do is to resort to sex as some sort of exchange in securing a job and she'd respond, if it's that one I for dun get work since but how long person won do am? if na that one, make I dey drink my water in days when the going gets really tough.
It was a dark night and a really long dark tunnel but she kept walking the walk and I tried to be a source of hope. One thing is to go through life, it gets really easier when you have someone doing life with you. you look back and see there's someone there watching and applauding your every step, there is a cheerleader gingering your spirit and being your muse. I try to be this with all my friends.
Few weeks ago she got a call to come for an interview that day, she was confused because she had applied for so many jobs and she did not know which is which. She asked for the location and told the person on the other end of the line, today is quite sudden for me and I do not have any money with me but I will run around and try to attend. The person said ok be there by 11:00 am. By the time the call came in, it was 8:30am.
After the call, she placed a call through to the person she saves her rent money with and asked the person to do some transfer to her as it was quite urgent. The person did send her some money and before 11:00am Sharon was already there for the interview.
The interviewer who also doubled as the owner of the establishment was really impressed and told her you have passed stage one of the test. After the whole interview process, the man told her to come the following week for a written interview but let her be rest assured she already got the job. Upon leaving, the man asked her how she got to know about the vacancy and she said her uncle sent her the link, it was posted on their community platform and the man said yes he works with too many northerners that he needs someone from home he can relate with and he's glad Sharon came in and ticked all his boxes. He further went on to tell Sharon that her Cv is the best he's seen and the fact that she's time conscious is also a huge plus because the nature of the job has a lot to do with timing, He could call on her at any time that they need to be in another State for a meeting and he expects her to be ready.
Today Sharon got a call in the morning from her soon to be employer, asking her if she can make it for the written interview by 11am as against the stipulated time of 3pm, because he has a meeting by 2pm that if she cannot make it its fine they can do tomorrow 9am but Sharon said she can make it as she already planned today. When she told me about it, I told her this is another test and I'm glad you are smart enough to be ready and flexible with your time too.
Sharon got to her written interview today and she was asked to write a formal letter to Attorney general of the federation with the sample given. She wrote the letter and sent to me for review and I told her its ok.
At the close of work, she got a "You've resumed" from her employer, be here early tomorrow we are going to one of the Northern state (Name withheld) to have a meeting with the commissioner of police. She texted me and I screamed in excitement. A win for Sharon is a win for me too.
NOW THE LESSONS
Sharon was in Warri living in a free apartment of her boyfriend's friend, the whole favour got sour when the boyfriend's friend made advances towards her and she turned him down. that was when he realized he needed to use the apartment. At the time, Sharon already saved up some money and she could just rent another apartment in Warri but I kept telling her to find a way and leave Warri as there is nothing there. So when she had that situation she started making move to relocate to Abuja.
The good thing is, her mind was made up so no matter how challenging it got, she was ready. For a couple of 6months while in Delta state, Sharon was homeless she lost some of her valuables in the process and some people will tell her why not just rent a house first in Warri then you plan towards Abuja but in her mind, there is no better time and she didn't want to get comfortable otherwise she wont fulfill her dreams.
She got to Abuja with a relentless spirit and barely 3months there, she's already securing a job with one of the leading law firm as their PR. She is educated, she has gathered experience, she takes cognizance of punctuality and she's ALWAYS ready for the occasion and any situation. These are the characteristics that will get you through life.
A lot of time you hear the youth say work nor dey, school na scam but the actual truth is that why there is high level of unemployment a lot of youth are unemployable because the majority constituting the work force of the nation are literate but not educated and when it comes to real life situation, they are not flexible nor ready. It's better to get a certificate and not use it but it's available upon request, than not to get a certificate available upon request.
A lot of time we get in a tight fix because we need that motivation to prepare ourselves for the next phase of life. If life is always easy, a couple of the things invented today that we enjoy will not exist. Hard times could be a stepping stone to greatness at the same time it could be seen as punishment and an unfortunate predicament. Whichever way you would want to view or take it will determine the next phase of your life because really, life is what we make out of it and of our own volition.
