Hola, querido hiver.

Feliz Navidad.

Hi, dear hiver.

This page of my diary could be entitled "Christmas Edition", given the coincidence with the celebration of Christmas Eve tonight and Christmas tomorrow. Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and, with him, the hope for a better world.

That hope was what, on this day like today, filled my heart every year when I was a child. At that time I was an active participant in my neighbourhood parish. My earliest Christmas memories are associated with spending the afternoon walking the streets with other parishioners. Some of us carried guitars and most of us waved tambourines while singing carols.

It was a great satisfaction to see the faces of the people when they saw us passing by or entering the shops. Occasionally someone would give us small gifts in the form of sweets or treats. And we always ended up at an old people's home, singing there to the grandparents who were very happy.

After the tour we would return home, tired but happy, to wait for the dinner that my mother would prepare and to watch on television the speech that the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, addressed to the citizens. This is still done today, although it is now given by his son Felipe VI. It's about 15 minutes of boredom and pretty but empty words. I suppose it is intended to instil a certain feeling of a united nation. The fact is that you can't get out of it even if you change channel - it's on every channel!

Dinner consisted of similar dishes every year. To start with, a cup of hot broth that toned the body and replenished us from the cold walk in the evening. Then there were hors d'oeuvres, which was my favourite thing. In case you are not familiar with them, hors d'oeuvres consist of a plate with various kinds of cold meats and small hot morsels. My mother had salchichón, chorizo, Serrano ham, mortadella and cheese accompanied by croquettes and calamares a la romana.

After the hors d'oeuvres came the main course, which was usually fish cooked with some kind of sauce. The truth is that I never liked fish, but I would eat whatever was served. To finish, the dessert they called pijama: an egg flan with pineapple and peach in syrup. It was delicious. I always repeated the peach. And then, while my parents drank coffee, my sister and I ate nougat and chocolate bonbons.

As it was a special night, we went to bed very late. In those years the tradition of Father Christmas had not yet arrived in my country and children received their presents on the night of the Three Wise Men. So we were in no hurry to go to bed.

Back to the present, today will be an almost normal night. My husband and I will have dinner alone, well, accompanied by our little dog Rocky. We will change the menu for something more special but without excesses. We'll watch the king's speech and the musical or comedy programmes that are usually broadcast, and when we fall asleep we'll go to bed and see you tomorrow.

Christmas Day will be spent at my parents' house, where we will go for lunch. There we will also meet up with my sister and spend the day together. My mother prepares food for a regiment and we almost always take some of the leftovers home with us. These are traditions that are starting to fade away, as families now rent houses and buy ready-made food or go to restaurants. But the important thing remains, which is to share together a time of celebration because we are still alive. Merry Christmas.

Those are some nice memories of your Christmases in the childhood! I suppose those memories are usually so great that everyone remembers them for life!!!

watch on television the speech that the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, addressed to the citizens. This is still done today, although it is now given by his son Felipe VI. It's about 15 minutes of boredom and pretty but empty words.

And I thought that Valencian people are hard-core Republicans... 😃 hehehehe... Just kidding... Btw. that speech was an interesting and curious thing for me when we came to live in Spain... I think that I watched at least 2-3 times in these 12 years that we live here... ;)

Have a pleasant Christmas Eve with your husband and Rocky!
And Merry Christmas!

Childhood marks us for a lifetime, although sometimes memories are not just as things happened. We usually put stuffing on them, hehe.
There are Republicans camouflaged everywhere. 🤣 In all the territories of what was the Kingdom of Aragon, and that includes Valencia, there is a certain feeling of rebellion against the Castilians.
I hope you had a good Christmas Eve and that you have a Merry Christmas. 🎄♥️🤗

Bendiciones !!
