How did you get your first job?
I completed graduation in Library Science and aftèr an year, got married. And after the birth of my daughter, I joined my husband in KSA.
Initially, I was enjoying the time spent with just my daughter and husband. But this enjoyment did not last long, because of the existing financial situation and inflation. So, by admitting my daughter at a nearby Kindergarten school, at the age of two and a half year old, my hunt for job started with a heavy heart, Indeed, I would like to thank my husband with this regard without whose support it would have been definitely impossible.
My post as a librarian in the library in the year 2004
I forwarded my resume to a nearby International school. Though majority of students ie., around 70%, were Indians, 30% of them belonged to other
nationalities. The Management responded to my resume very fast, and I was asked to appear before the board at a given date and time. After the interview, they asked me if I could join immediately as a Librarian and my pay scale being so and so. Trust me, that was above my wild expectations. I immediately said "yes".
My son with me in the library in the year 2006
To be honest, after graduating as a librarian, I never had any school level experience, for which I was nervous. They asked me few questions from their view points and later, asked me to go and meet the existing librarian as they wanted to be sure that I had some subject knowledge.
With prayers chanting within me, I entered the silent space only to realise, the present librarian was from my own place. Ultimately my fear turned to happiness. And instead of the routine job interview, our talk was all about our town, people, food, missing our country etc. And at the end as we became more close I confessed to him saying I have no prior experience working in a library. He was so patient, asking me to come the very next day.
As scheduled I was there by 7.30 a.m. The school timing in the middle east countries are 7.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. So I was there before schedule by 7.15 a.m. and he was kind enough to teach me with the ledger books in one hand and keys on other hand, demonstrating which shelf has what collections, though every cupboard was highlighted.
Out of curiosity, I asked him what was his reason to give up the job. He said, he need to join his family in the other part of middle east, as his wife was a senior teacher where he was to be posted as a librarian henceforth. One of the best teacher he is, I understood from the way he taught me.
After our meeting, he was asked to give a review about me. Two days later, I received a call from the school asking me to report to school on the following day. Deep in my heart, I thanked and prayed for this wonderful person, who gave a pleasing report about me, due to which I could serve in that pleasant environment as a librarian for 15 years.
With my first batch of students
And from there I started my wonderful journey professionally and personally. While looking back, still Iam unsure how the 15 years ran so fast.
So this was my firsr best job, where I resumed for 15 long years.
The photos were captured during my tenure in the International School. A good old ever glowing memory that will last forever. The texts typed are my own, unless otherwise stated. Thankyou for your patient visit.
