Recognizing the incredible women who have provided us with care and guidance throughout our lives that's what Mother's Day is about.
The date of this joyfull day varies around the world, but the essence stays the same: it's a day to celebrate and show our love and gratitude to our mothers.
In the Netherlands, Mother's Day takes place today.
Let me share a little piece of my own Mother's Day.
Which was filled with cherished customs, delectable food, and quality time with loved ones.
Breakfast Delights with a Selection of Favorites
My two boys surprised me with a gift to start the day, which is a really touching tradition!
Each year they surprise me with a modest gesture of their affection and a beaming wake-up call while I'm still buried in bed.
They gave me a gorgeous box of chocolates this year that was thoughtfully chosen to include my top chocolate flavors: caramel/salt, coffee, limoncello, mango/passion fruit, syrup waffle, Baileys, and licor43.
It goes without saying that the first two chocolates vanished into happy small mouths before they could even reach the box!
(Let's just say that self-gifting may have played a little role!)
Bringing Joy - A Mother's Day Bouquet
After my own delightful surprise, it was time to return the favor.
I know flowers are always a welcome gift for my mother.
It's just a small gesture but it brings her joy, and seeing her smile makes my day complete.
Her whole face lit up when I gave her the beautiful flowers.
A Parade Fit for Royalty (and Delectable Limburg Vlaai)
The celebrations continued with a trip to Obbicht, a town known for its annual Civil shooting festival.
The highlight of the day was surely the colorful parade.
We were astounded by a remarkably varied show.
During the parade, which lasted 30 minutes, we got a glimpse of several cultures and historical periods.
An assortment of fantastical, historical, and military outfits passed us by.
With all of the pomp and circumstance, the atmosphere was electrifying.
I've included a video and some pictures I took of the sights and noises below.
Following the parade, it wouldn't be a Dutch celebration without some delicious refreshments!
We indulged in Limburg vlaai, a regional pastry that boasts a prestigious EU protected designation.
The taste truly speaks for itself – a delightful combination of flaky crust and creamy filling.
Family Fun: Games, Puzzles, and Quality Time
We set aside the afternoon to play games and solve puzzles as a family.
Like my father, I'm kind of fascinated with word puzzles, sudoku, and crosswords.
We can bond over this common hobby, which also provides the opportunity for lighthearted competition.
The strength and support that come from tight family relationships are always reinforced by the fact that my dad is always willing to lend a helping hand when I need it.
As the sun began to set, we played a great game of Rummikub with the kids to round off the day. As we plotted and took action, laughter erupted throughout the space.
Looking Back with Gratitude
In retrospect, I can say that this Mother's Day was very memorable.
It was a day devoted to family, full of kind deeds, delectable treats, and happy times spent together.
There's no better way to spend this day with my parents and sons by my side.
I truly hope we can celebrate Mother's Day together for many more years to come since I treasure these customs and memories.
