Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for friday, the 29th day of December, 2023. Yesterday, the cycle of disappointments continued in EPL as Arsenal, playing host to West Ham United in a London derby, tasted their own bitter pills as they woefully lost (0-2) at home. A win by Arsenal tonight over the Hammers would have moved them top of the table. But that was not to be!
In the second game of the night, Brighton who squared up against fifth placed Tottenham Hotspur at the Amex Stadium also defeated Spurs by (4-2). That defeat ensured that Spurs remained 5th on the log. There won't be matches today until Saturday. Larry then takes his time to have a look at today in #history.
Larry begins his look at today in history from the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1845, The annexation of the Republic of Texas by the United States, which was approved by the United States Congress on this day in 1845, sparkled the Mexican War since area between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River was contested territory.
From USA, Larry goes to Brazil. He finds out that on this day in 2022, Legendary Brazilian football (soccer) player Pelé passed away at the age of 82 in São Paolo, Brazil. He was one of the sport's finest players and one of the first athletes to achieve international fame.
From Brazil, Larry goes to Guinea. He finds out that on this day in 2015, The World Health Organisation pronounced Guinea to be free of the deadly disease, Ebola, approximately two years after the disease was first diagnosed in the nation and caused an outbreak in western Africa.
From Guinea, Larry goes to Cambodia. He finds out that on this day in 1998, Leaders of the Khmer Rouge, the hardline communist force that ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, formally apologised for the estimated 1.5 million people killed during their reign.
From Cambodia, Larry goes to Ireland. He finds out that on this day in 1937, with the adoption of a new constitution, the Irish Free State became known as Ireland.
Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from Croatia. He finds out that on this day in 1924, Miroslav Krleža, essayist, novelist, poet, and playwright who was a dominant major figure in modern Croatian literature, died in Zagreb, Yugoslavia (now in Croatia).
Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
